It Comes With The Territory
Back in the 1960s a phrase was born among the travelling sales personnel. This phrase was meant to convey to a sales person that when they accept a sales territory they accept whatever problems or prerequisites they found in that region. It meant if you accept the assignment, you accept the responsibility. This phrase was: “It comes with the territory.” Peter is reminding us that when you make the decision to follow Christ unjust treatment should just be expected. “It comes with the territory, mate.” As we move from chapter 3 into chapter 4 Peter’s tone changes from one of persecution being a possibility to it being a reality. Peter tells us it comes with the territory because of the commitment to new life, and because of the confusion of the old world.
