The prevailing culture cares little for the holy worship of God. Rather, let us treasure eternal truths and yearn to worship the Lord in reverence and honour. Our awesome God is worthy of our deepest love and praise.
I issue to you a CALL TO WORSHIP.
Consider, THE SPIRIT OF THE AGE…
We live in an age that treats everything as COMMON. There’s a general breakdown of STRUCTURE and ORDER.
The prevailing CULTURE pays little regard to what is rightful and righteous.
There is in churches a growing LACK OF REVERENCE for the Lord and His Word, and often a shallow approach…
THE HOLY WORSHIP OF GOD has been replaced with a focus on pleasing men and drawing a crowd.
There is something sadly lacking.
THE PREACHER acts more like a CEO, a standup comedian, or a rock star, rather than a servant of God, and a true shepherd of the people of God.
We have much need of REVERENCE.
In many churches today, there is no hint of THE FEAR OF THE LORD—no REVERENCE for HIS PERSON, HIS WORK, or HIS WORD.
For many, they treat God’s Word flippantly, as something that matters only in WHAT THEY WANT TO HEAR.
God’s word sets out an ORDER for THE HOME… CHILDREN are to honour their father and mother (Eph. 6:2, 3).
The words HONOUR and OBEY tell us how to REVERENCE and RESPECT God, and others.
People are called to OBEY the authorities who are over us (in Hebrews 13:17).
Our Lord sets out an ORDER for how we are to worship.
The Bible speaks much of THE HOLY WORSHIP OF GOD.
Our worship should be REVERENT, DECENT, AND IN ORDER.
- We handle ETERNAL TRUTHS.
- We minister HOLY THINGS.
We are called to Worship.
…To BIBLICAL AND REVERENT WORSHIP.
Consider these truths, as to…
OUR CALL TO WORSHIP…
Is a call to…
- A consciousness of THE PRESENCE OF GOD, who is a “consuming fire”
- And, A TUNING OF OUR HEARTS humbly before Him
- We have COME TO DO BUSINESS WITH THE LIVING GOD, who is HOLY.
May we take these truth seriously:
THE HOLY WORSHIP OF GOD
It’s what we are here for, right here, right now.
1 Chronicles 16:29
Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
Our worship is meant to be God glorifying and conducted in the beauty of holiness.
Only then will it be truly sweet.
Consider, THE HOLY WORSHIP OF GOD.
Our gathering together is called in the Word, A “HOLY CONVOCATION” – as someone has put it, it’s a group of “holy people” who meet in a holy house to worship a holy God, who is here by His Holy Spirit, and holy angels. And we come together to study God’s Holy Word.
This is OUR CALL TO WORSHIP
The Lord told the Israelites that THE ARK OF THE COVENANT was holy and that they must not touch it lest they die.
Staves were placed in the sides of the ark to carry it by, and then only by holy men.
Right through the scriptures there was an emphasis on Holiness and the Reverence of God.
THE TABERNACLE IN THE WILDERNESS, which was really just a tent, was to be revered.
Our GATHERING PLACE here is holy. It’s a mere building. But it is a house of prayer.
We enter into God’s awesome presence, in a consecration of heart.
This is WORSHIP.
OUR CALL TO WORSHIP…
TO REVERE GOD should be our PRIORITY in life. It starts here.
THE FEAR OF THE LORD is our PRIORITY.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
We HUMBLE ourselves before His majesty and glory.
The Lord calls us to a heart attitude and A SPIRIT OF WORSHIP, as we enter into God’s presence.
WORSHIP reminds us of WHO we serve.
HE IS WORTHY – of all praise, honour and glory.
In His presence, the holy angels cover their faces, in Isaiah 6:1-4.
As sinners, we stand before a God of righteousness and truth, of judgment and justice.
He is A CONSUMING FIRE AGAINST SIN, Ex. 19:18-25; Heb. 12:29.
We must stand before God, by no work of our own. – – But only by the grace which God has wrought in Christ.
For this, WE WORSHIP HIM.
The reality of Who God is – and who we are – shapes all true worship.
He wrought our SALVATION…
- He accomplished it
- It is His work alone in Christ
- We think of the limitless wonder of His grace, His mercy, and His lovingkindness.
We honour Him for His BLESSINGS.
With grateful hearts – for His abundant goodness and mercy.
This is our call to worship.
The holy God gave His own Son to save us, when we were sinners and His enemies.
THE WORD OF GOD calls us…
- To GODLY FEAR
- To HONOUR
- To REVERENCE…
OUR JOY AND REJOICING is because of THE REALITY AND TRUTH of Who God is, and THE AMAZING WONDER of His great salvation.
And our relationship with Him.
It is all TO HIS PRAISE.
GOD IS AWE INSPIRING…
OUR GOD IS HOLY.
We know Him, and honour Him, in reverence and fear.
Worship means to prostrate ourselves before God, to bend down, to bow down, to bend the knee and to bend the heart.
O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.
As we come together to commune with our holy God may we have hearts humbled today.
We recognise our great need, and we honour our great and worthy King.
GOD IS HOLY.
He is totally set apart – to Whom no one can be compared.
He is separated by an infinite chasm – from all that is called creature.
Let us truly honour and lift Him high.
Let us WORSHIP HIM, IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH.
Sometimes the words of the Psalms express it most beautifully…
(2) Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever.
(3) Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.
(4) One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.
(5) I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works.
(6) And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts: and I will declare thy greatness.
This is a truly holy time.
We speak HIS NAME in REVERENCE, because of WHO He is.
For us, His very NAME is HOLY and REVEREND.
…holy and reverend is his name.
He is AWE-INSPIRING. He demands – and deserves – our deepest RESPECT because of WHO HE IS and WHAT HE HAS SAID.
Sanctify God. Recognise Him to be truly holy and worthy of all praise.
Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.
May He be your fear!
May He be your dread! (Isaiah 8:13).
THE HOLY WORSHIP OF GOD is something precious that he wants from us…
Worship that is holy.
Worship that accords with the Holy Word of God.
This is our call to worship.
Worship that is reverent, decent, and in order. Holy and Biblical worship. That is our desire. To please and honour our worthy king. And His glorious and fearful name.
If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD;
We bend our hearts and BOW BEFORE THE AUTHORITY OF HIS WORD.
We believe this book, cover to cover.
We bow at the name of Jesus, and we confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
God has all AUTHORITY. And we submit unto Him.
He has the right to be worshipped and reverenced.
He is a “terrible God.”
In other words, He inspires terror, fear, and dread.
For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible (awe inspiring)…
We submit to God’s Word.
As a God-fearing people.
We worship Him, as GOD ALONE…
- We will have no other gods before us
- He alone is sovereign
- He alone has the right to demand of us what He wills
- His name, by which He reveals Himself to us, is holy.
Let them praise thy great and terrible name; for it is holy.
All honour and glory is due unto Him (1 Timothy 1:17; Romans 15:6).
Respect is due Him because of His LOVE (John 3:16; Romans 5:8) and His WRATH (Hebrews 12:28-29).
This is our call to worship.
True reverence leads us to approach God with a right spirit.
And, in this spirit, we come to this time of Holy Communion.
