Have you done enough to deserve Heaven? It’s impossible. But Christ is sufficient – if you have Him. We can know His supply. His Grace is sufficient – to bear you up and hold you close in His tender care, no matter what your trial or how painful the thorns. His Blood is sufficient to make the foulest clean, and save the most sinful, if they will but apply the blood. His Spirit is sufficient to empower and embolden you and equip you for service beyond your abilities, and your inadequacies. If you will relinquish your self sufficiency you can find His awesome will. Our sufficiency is of God. And that’s enough.
Have you done ENOUGH to make it to heaven? Will your good works be ENOUGH? Will your religion be enough? That’s how some people live life.
For some they have a “do-it-yourself” religion.
Some religions say you save yourself.
Really this is IMPOSSIBLE. Nothing we can ever do can be enough.
Rather, the Bible tells us of a Person, who is enough. If we know Him as our shepherd, we shall dwell in the House of the Lord forever. We will know His eternal presence with us. And that’s enough.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
One time a little boy was asked to recite Psalm 23.
Here is what he said:
The Lord is my Shepherd.
Truly, yes, the Lord is my Shepherd and that’s enough.
He is all I need.
He is all you need.
We find in Him OUR SUPPLY.
If you have Jesus Christ, then…
There’s nothing more to be added. You have this assurance. His assurance.
There are three things I put to you today that are sufficient. That are enough…
His Grace is sufficient for your strength.
Paul wrote at a difficult time, when he was struggling. He was blessed with some wonderful revelations from God.
Yet he was also given something that was a thorn in his flesh. He didn’t define it.
He asked the Lord to take it away…
We pick up the story in…
2 Corinthians 12:7-10
(7) And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
(8) For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
(9) And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
(10) Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
Paul knew weakness. He knew loss. He knew pain. He knew trials.
He asked the Lord to take the thorn away.
Yet God said My grace is sufficient for thee.
God says my strength is made perfect in weakness.
His grace is all I need.
All that you need.
His grace is sufficient.
No matter what you are going through.
No matter how much hurting you will bear.
No matter how weak you feel. His grace is greater still.
His grace is what we need…
Even in our weakness.
- In our lack.
- In our need.
The Lord wants us to draw from His strength. He sometimes humbles us.
He will sometimes allow difficult things in life’s pathway, so we can grow stronger faith.
…out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight…
All the heroes of the faith were deep down weak and vulnerable, yet humble enough for God to be strong in them…
We see little David facing up to this enormous giant, Goliath, with just a stone and a slingshot, yet he had the power of God.
We see Gideon. Gideon, who was at first a cowardly man, hiding himself. Gideon, and his 300 men, in all his weakness, as he overcame an army of 135,000 Midianites. They had clay vessels and torches, yet they had the power of God.
Sometimes our weakness is necessary, so God can work.
Christ is sufficient.
He sustains us.
We can rely on that.
When all around my soul gives way, He still is all my hope and stay.
We can know His grace.
When we have lost everything else.
We YET HAVE His CONSTANT grace.
God’s grace is given freely to us.
His grace is sufficient.
Some people try and add to grace.
No sir, His Grace is enough. His grace is sufficient.
What we need is His mighty grace.
That’s enough for us.
We have to believe that the grace of Jesus is enough for us.
His grace speaks of His great generosity towards us.
2 Peter 1:3
According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
God’s power… His divine power has given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness.
He has given to us everything we need.
When we consider our weakness, we see the contrast of God’s great grace. Amazing grace.
It’s in our weakness that He is strong.
The God we know and love – the God of the Bible – is called
1 Peter 5:10,
“THE GOD OF ALL GRACE.”
Everything we have need of He has given to us.
HE is to us.
He is all-sufficient.
His righteousness is sufficient.
It’s by His grace.
Don’t lean on anything but.
Don’t go about trying to establish your own righteousness.
Paul found the secret, the secret of grace…
And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
What Jesus has done is enough for you.
Where sin abounded God’s grace does MUCH MORE abound. Romans 5:20.
The Word tells us that the grace of God hath appeared to all men.
We all need grace.
In Noah’s day there was great wickedness. In Genesis 6:8, we read, “BUT Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.”
The Bible calls His throne the throne of Grace.
Go to the throne and get the grace.
Whenever you feel weak, remember this, that His Grace is sufficient for your strength.
His Blood is sufficient for your salvation.
Some believe that salvation is by earning and deserving it. By our won striving and working. I have known people who have never known an assurance of salvation. Really, they are living in doubt and unbelief.
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
His Blood is all I need.
Some will try and add to the blood. As if there must be some work that we do, to deserve God’s gift.
It’s not the Blood of Jesus Christ PLUS behaviour modification and moral improvement.
It’s by the blood we can enter in…
Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus.
There’s boldness because of the blood. There’s access into the very Holiest because of the blood.
That’s sufficient for your salvation.
The Blood of Jesus is all it takes to pay for my sin, to cleanse me from my sin.
On the cross – what was it that He cried out?
“It is partially finished.”
NO! He cried out: It is finished. It is… Complete. Finito. Mission accomplished. Done.
When the Lord poured out His judgment on Egypt He told Moses…
When I see the Blood plus your works I will pass over you.
NO! He said, When I see the Blood I will pass over you.
The people had to place their faith in the virtue of the shed blood, the sacrifice made. They had simply to trust God’s promise. He says, when I see the blood I will pass over you. He will not pour out judgment on the soul that trusts in Him.
The Lord Jesus’ Blood sacrifice was sufficient to save you. Simply trust that.
The blood of Jesus provides us full and free forgiveness.
Nothing needs to be added.
Nothing CAN be added.
You were not redeemed with corruptible things,
1 Peter 1:19
But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.
I want to tell you, with conviction, that the Blood is what we need. The precious blood of Christ.
Bloodless religion won’t save your soul.
Philosophy and good works won’t save you.
And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
I’m glad we can start over.
I’m glad we can know salvation.
Because the blood is sufficient for our salvation.
John wrote in the Book of the revelation…
Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood.
It’s the Blood that we need to get clean.
If you want to overcome the accuser of the brethren you need the blood…
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
The blood of the lamb. It’s sufficient.
This is the one and only cleansing agent that we need to have in this generation:
1 John 1:7
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
His grace is sufficient for your weakness. That’s enough.
His blood is sufficient for your salvation. That’s enough.
His Spirit is sufficient for your service.
Now, as a believer, you may consider yourself not able to serve God, to be His minister, His servant…
You can perhaps feel inadequate. Not able.
2 Corinthians 3:5
Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;
2 Corinthians 3:6
Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
It’s easy to feel powerless.
We feel not able.
But the Word tells us He has made us able.
Sometimes I struggle.
I feel like it’s heavy going.
But I have learned not to have confidence in men.
It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.
Don’t put confidence in people, or yourself either.
Some will place their confidence in people, and they will be disappointed.
Some will place their confidence in their own abilities. The power of the self.
But, NO… Our aim is not self-actualisation
Is found in God.
He has told us in His word that He has made us able…
By His Spirit.
Paul says, the Spirit gives life.
His Spirit is sufficient to enable you.
The Spirit of Christ gives us power.
He makes us able.
We can feel inadequate.
But He is enough.
There are many times the scriptures (at least 15) that teach the truth that the Lord is my strength, as Moses sang:
The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father’s God, and I will exalt him.
There are at least 32 “BE STRONG” commands in scripture – most based on God’s presence and strength and related to being courageous and not afraid in battle.
Paul told Timothy
2 Timothy 2:1
Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
Our Lord makes us capable to serve Him.
Of course He gives us the tools that we need.
He has given us His sure Word.
Most important of all, He has given us of His Spirit.
Someone was asking me lately, how do we know we have the Holy Spirit?
Well, it’s certainly not in some showy dramatic display or sham signs. It’s not in some spectacle or manufactured experience.
It’s about believing the book, and doing what it says.
If we know the Lord Jesus as our Saviour, He has given us of His Spirit.
Some will mistakenly think of Christians as first and second class. Some have the basics, and others have had THE EXPERIENCE, and think that they speak in tongues or have something extra. When what they are doing is actually not in accord with the scriptures and is not the working of the Holy Spirit at all.
His word to us is this, the Spirit giveth life.
And so, OUR SUFFICIENCY IS OF GOD.
You don’t need to run off to hear or to tune into some supposed great prophet or healer, you need to put your own faith into action.
God’s power works in weak human vessels.
When we are weak He is strong.
I just love the scriptures and the promises of the scriptures.
This says it all:
2 Corinthians 4:7
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.
Can’t you claim that promise today.
The power is of God, not of us.
2 Corinthians 4:6
For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
The same God almighty, the creator. This is who it is talking about. The same God.
He says to you this truth,
OUR SUFFICIENCY IS OF GOD.
You might say to me, Preacher, I’m all washed up. I’m hurting. I’m weak. I’m all torn up. I am struggling. I am not strong enough.
Our sufficiency is of God.
You might have a thorn in your flesh. It’s hard. It’s heavy. It’s hurting. You’ve prayed and prayed and prayed. And three times God has said the same thing. My grace is sufficient for you.
He is saying to you, my strength is made perfect in weakness.
He says to you, My grace is enough to see you through. That’s enough.
You will be closer to God and you will know His strength in a greater measure than people who don’t have a thorn. You are blessed today.
You might say to me today. Preacher, I don’t know this salvation you’re talking about. I have religion but I don’t have salvation. You have to hear His piercing cry afresh today, IT IS FINISHED.
You have to see the Blood applied. You have to know the Blood. To know that the precious blood of Christ as of a lamb without blemish was shed for you. And when you apply the blood to your life. That’s enough.
That’s enough, to redeem your soul. That’s enough, to set you free. That’s enough, to wash your heart as clean as clean can be.
You might say to me, preacher, I am a Christian but I am not serving God like I know He wants me to.
What’s stopping you?
What’s stopping you from serving God in this church? What’s getting in the way? What’s the blockage?
God’s plan is the New testament church. That is His plan. His church is where we are to serve God. Make a commitment to this. Do not hold back. Let nothing stop you. You have the Spirit who gives you life, and power, and ability.
Paul says the excellency of the power is of God, and not of us.
He says it’s the power of the Holy Spirit we need. The Spirit giveth life.
Truly, our sufficiency is of God, Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament.
Moses said, I am not able.
Jeremiah said, I am not able.
God has fitted you with everything you need. He has filled you with His Spirit.
Sure enough we can keep on growing and study the Word, and mature in our faith. But we all have the core essentials if we know the Lord is my Shepherd. That’s enough.
This same word promises you – He has made you able…
God has made you able. He has enabled you, to serve Him.
Find how He has gifted you, and employ yourself. Engage yourself in this. Apply yourself to what God has enabled you to be and to do.
Some of you are holding yourself back.
There’s other things getting in the way. Clear them out of the way.
Let go of what’s stopping you. God wants us to commit ourselves to His service, to His church.
You don’t need to wait for something else to happen. I have seen many people make this mistake, of doing nothing, thinking they are not ready.
God, by His Spirit, has made you able. That’s enough.
The Word tells us to be content with such things as ye have…
So we can have all sufficiency in all things… Make the most of what you have an employ it for the glory of God.
2 Corinthians 9:8
And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:
We have all we need, for every good work.
God is sufficient.
The Bible is sufficient.
The Blood is sufficient.
God’s Spirit equips us and empowers us.
He has given us all that we need.
It is upon Him that we must rest
For our Strength
For our Salvation
And for our Service.
