God is Totally Awesome
Stand in awe of Him. He is God. He spake and it was done. My heart standeth in awe of Thy Word. Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD.
It’s a word people use a lot. It’s used like a slang word. People say AWESOME, and they mean EXCELLENT, or OUTSTANDING.
People describe the weather as AWESOME – or their sports team, a meal, a car, a song, or some occasion or other.
When you think about it, though, GOD ALONE IS AWESOME. Sure, there are other things that we could say are GREAT.
But God alone is AWESOME — He is the only one we should stand in awe of.
AWESOME means INSPIRING or worthy of ADMIRATION and REVERENCE.
Our world pretty much misses this vital truth.
Why? Because there is NO FEAR OF GOD before the eyes of the wicked-(Psalm 36:1)
The world DOES NOT FEAR GOD.
Churches abound that teach THE LOVE OF GOD, but they will rarely teach about THE FEAR OF GOD.
We should be filled with AWE as we catch a glimpse of the eternal glory of the living God.
God is to be feared.
Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world STAND IN AWE OF HIM.
God is great and is to be exalted and reverenced as the creator of all the heavens and the earth.
Do we HONOUR GOD?
(8) Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world STAND IN AWE OF HIM.
(9) For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.
We can STAND IN AWE because WHAT GOD SAYS is the ABSOLUTE TRUTH.
He SPAKE, and it was DONE.
We should STAND IN AWE at THE WORK OF CREATION.
Do you believe God?
Do you believe the Bible?
Stand in awe of Him.
Princes have persecuted me without a cause: but my heart standeth in awe of thy word.
STAND IN AWE of THE WORD OF GOD.
We stand in awe of God because of the GREAT POWER and INTEGRITY of HIS WORD.
The Psalmist is saying, though the pressures of the world push the Christian to compromise, the fear of God should give us the power and strength to stay faithful to God’s Word.
We can thank God for His Holy Word. His inspired, infallible, inerrant Word.
God through His gospel word as given in the Bible, blessed by the Spirit, saves sinners and lifts the needy, comforts the troubled, and works conviction of sin, and opens the eyes of the blind!
With the Word He equips His people for strength in the battles against sin and evil, and gives direction and guidance in the way everlasting and warnings against the ways of sin, and Satan, and this world.
Our Lord brought His gospel word to us personally.
God’s Word is here for us in our tongue.
God’s Word to calls us:
Set your hope on God and let His Word be your guide and guard in all your ways, and you shall not be put to shame.
The awe of God and His Word go hand in hand.
Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.
It seems that as a people we have lost the awe of God.
On the one hand you have those who pretend to deny God exists. They act as if they have no God to answer to.
And on the other hand you have those who shape God to suit their own conceptions and preferences.
For them, their god is the Big man in the sky. And Jesus is your just alright with me, he is my mate. And, this god comes running to answer their call. And his reason for being is to give you a successful life, as the world would define it. And when we use the mantra to command him, as it were, ‘in Jesus’ name’… it acts like a magical charm summoning this obedient god like a genie in a bottle.
- God is so little feared today.
- I believe this is why we see
- Rebellion in young people
- Our beer soaked culture
- Rock music’s wickedness
- Confused doctrines abounding
- Women preachers
- Ecumenical mayhem
- Wrecked marriages or no marriages at all
- Fornication within the church
- Disobedient children
- Disrespect to parents
- Foul language
- Chaotic families
As a people I think we have lost the awe of God and His Word. God isn’t even in the picture. People act as if the King of all the earth has left His throne. As if God can’t see what they are doing.
In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
This is what is happening. People have lost that awe of God. There is no fear of God before their eyes.
People get prideful and vain. As if they have no God to answer to.
Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
Yet accounting time will surely come.
So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
Where is the awe of God?
There is sense of HUMILITY before Him when we stand in awe of Him. This is a good thing.
As a people we need to regain that healthy Fear, Respect, and Submission…
We ought to be…
In awe of…
- His wisdom
- His power
- His might
- His mercy
- His glory
- His kindness
He has created us for His praise.
He has made us to serve as instruments of His glory.
It is standing in awe of Him that we can please God.
The LORD taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.
How do we develop a sense of the fear of God?
Ask the Lord for it.
Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.
Seek His face.
Seek out His Word.
This is the heart that fears God.
That walks a different way.
We will walk in His ways.
We will walk in His truth.
He gives us a new direction.
Fear God and depart from evil.
Sometimes we fear men so much – what others will say about us or think of us.
Yet we think about God so little.
It is good for us to sense His might and His power and rule over us, and His ultimate power as to our eternal destiny:
And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
It is good for us to dwell on God’s mighty power and dominion.
God is sovereign over the affairs of men.
He is sovereign, ‘…over pagan kings and presidents, our families, our friends, the people we witness to, and us. God is absolute.
‘His dominion is total and complete, from the macro of creation of galaxies and universes to the micro of the number of hairs on our head.
‘From the macro decisions of claiming Christ, who to marry, and what career to pursue, to the micro of what color of socks to buy, God is there.’ ( http://www.churchleadership.org/apps/articles/default.asp?articleid=46710&columnid=4544)
It is good if we dwell on Who He is, as the Creator of the universe…
How we need to develop that sense of wonder, as we witness God’s creation all around us. And realise what we are in comparison with this huge expanse all around us… And we realise what fools they are who would deny His creation…
(1) A Psalm of David. O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
(2) Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
(3) When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
(4) What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
(5) For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
(6) Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:
(7) All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;
(8) The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.
(9) O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!
And we stand in awe of the mighty God, who made all things, and by Him all things consist, that He was made man and she d His blood for us…
(12) Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
(13) Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
(14) In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
(15) Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
(16) For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
(17) And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
And we stand in awe of Him, who made us, Who saves us and Who sustains us, as He has given us the privilege of relationship with Him, as we worship Him…
Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.
And, as we stand in awe of Him, we cry out as David did,
1 Chronicles 29:11
Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.
We stand in awe of Him. In other words he is not some cosmic buddy Jesus and some man in the sky. He is totally awesome, the Creator of Heaven and earth, and He has given us His Holy Word and shows us how w are to render Him the due worship that is worthy of His name… Not some flippant offering like Cain, but a sacrifice of praise that is truly reverent and from a heart changed by the Spirit of the living God:
So that we can serve God acceptably, with reverence and godly fear,
(28) Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
(29) For our God is a consuming fire.
Stand in awe of Him. It is truly God generates this sense of reverence in us.
The Holy Spirit of God is the spirit of GODLY fear…
And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;
As we stand in awe of Him, it prompts us to praise:
Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.
Stand in awe of the awesome glory and holiness of God.
Stand in awe and ascribe to Him the worth due unto Him, by glorifying His person and work.
We cannot fathom His greatness.
Ask the Lord to stir a sense of wonder in you.
Of His great Majesty.
God is glorious. He is awe inspiring.
God is pleased with those who fear Him:
The LORD taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.
Repent of your lack of the fear of God.
Of neglecting to listen to God.
Stand in awe of Him.
Stand in awe of His word.
