The Lord’s Supper: Purchased by His Blood (Communion)
God has purchased His church – by His own Blood.
It’s been said that preaching and worship is meant to be DIDACTIC – in other words it is meant to teach us…
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
By our songs we are teaching one another.
As a like verse puts it:
Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
In our singing we are glorifying God. There’s teaching going on.
At this time also, even as we join together in the breaking of bread together we find some vital lessons to learn…
It’s a corporate time of learning, of reminding, of praise…
We have powerful reminders here.
Powerful symbols, of…
- Divine deliverance
God has purchased His church. Turn to Acts 20…
Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
God has purchased His church. The Word of God says that you that are God’s blood bought people He has purchased with His own blood.
The King James Bible tells us clearly here – of the church of God which He hath purchased with His own Blood.
We need this truth.
We need this Bible.
We need this table…
Here –at this table – we have some telling truths… We have…
- An INVITATION – our Lord is the host who welcomes us into His presence;
- An EXAMINATION – in this holy time there’s a shining forth of an inward searchlight into the very core of our being; and… we have…
- A PROCLAMATION – a showing forth of the Lord’s death till he come
Consider the invitation…
Our glorious master invites us to leave the rags of our own righteousness, which are really the inadequate rags of our own efforts and sin, to receive His perfect robe of righteousness… He invites us to leave our beggarly ways and be transformed into His own precious people. What will your response be to this amazing invitation?
Paul tells us to make a choice – he writes of the cup of the Lord and the cup of devils.
He writes of the Lord’s table and the table of devils.
1 Corinthians 10:21
Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.
Notice, it is the Lord’s Table.
It’s His. And you’re invited.
You have an INVITATION.
He invites you. Personally.
If you are of the church of God.
He has purchased you.
With His own blood.
How will you respond to His RSVP?
All the expenses have been paid.
This invitation is free – at no cost to you. He has paid the full cost.
He beckons to you…
The Word says this man receiveth sinners.
There’s an INVITATION.
Whosever will may come.
As you come to Him you leave some things behind you.
You stop drinking from the devil’s cup, and instead you drink of the cup of the Lord.
Stop sitting at the devil’s table, and come and dine at the Lord’s table.
And Whosoever will may come…
- The lepers
- The lame
- The prostitutes
- The tax collectors.
Also, there’s an EXAMINATION
This table speaks to us of…
An encounter with a Holy God.
Our risen Lord is present.
And this encounter calls us to an examination.
Isaiah hears the angels crying, Holy, Holy, Holy…
Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.
Examination is called for.
He searches our hearts.
Are you ready for communion with God?
This table of Communion speaks of… Fellowship – it’s both horizontal and vertical.
Also, this table speaks of PROCLAMATION.
We are showing – or proclaiming – the Lord’s death until he come.
We are proclaiming the Passover lamb.
We are proclaiming the vital witness of the Blood. Of this awesome purchase price paid.
The church of God which He hath purchased with His own Blood.
This table is a witness, To
There’s a proclamation right now…
Of the awesome power of God.
This Table speaks of the Upper Room. Consider that…
In that upper room He sat with them. He ate and drank and prophesied of His bleeding and dying as the slain lamb of God for the sin of the world.
In that upper room He later appeared as the risen Lord.
And in that same upper room as the early church met for prayer… It was in that same upper room where the church of God received the power from on high.
He is just as surely with us, right now.
Here today we make proclamation.
We proclaim the power of the Blood.
The Blood of Jesus Christ that provides for us.
Consider the Proclamation…
The Blood provides PARDON. Our debt is cancelled and paid, in full.
For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
…without shedding of blood is no remission.
The Blood provides PROPITIATION. To propitiate means to appease an offended person, in this case God.
Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
The Blood provides JUSTIFICATION. To justify is to declare free from the penalty of sin on the ground of Christ’s righteousness.
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
The Blood provides REDEMPTION. To redeem means to buy back as a slave from a slave market, to rescue, to reclaim by payment.
In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
The Blood atones for us. Atone means “at-one-ment”, “make at one” and reconcile enemies into harmony and unity. We have atonement by Jesus’ death.
For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
The Blood makes peace with God and man.
And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself…
The Blood gives us boldness to enter God’s presence.
Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus.
The Blood cleanses us from all sin.
1 John 1:7
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood.
The Blood gives us a new song.
And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
The Blood gives us power to overcome opposition.
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
The Blood is precious to us.
1 Peter 1:18,19
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.
There’s an INVITATION.
There’s an EXAMINATION.
There’s a PROCLAMATION.
Until He come.
the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
