God calls us…
- To BE STRONG…
- To find STRENGTH in Him…
1 Corinthians 16:13-14
Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. (14) Let all your things be done with charity.
BE STRONG AND TAKE A STAND
God calls us…
- To be awake – to be alert and…
- To stand firm.
- To take a stand.
By God’s power we can learn to..
Stand fast… in:
- Faith, and
God calls on us, to…
Stand up, for
Take a stand.
People are watching you.
Be strong and don’t falter.
Don’t give ground.
Rather, hold your ground.
Take a stand, in…
It is through those tough times we have to go through that He is developing us.
Like the jogger who keeps working at it…
It is in those times when we are feeling pushed and we have need of endurance and patience, that we have to wait and keep at it in faith, that we can develop spiritual stamina…
Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.
The Lord Jesus is our prototype.
He sets the ultimate standard.
He stood up for us, taking our own guilt and bearing the cross for us…
BE STRONG AND TAKE COURAGE
Back o the text we started with…
Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.
Act like men.
Literally: be manly. You could express it…
- Be men of courage
- Face opposition, challenges
- With manliness
We have need of courage.
This is a battle.
Opposing forces will wear us down, if we lose our resolve.
God told Joshua, as he was facing the trial of his life…
Be strong AND very courageous…
God told Joshua, go over this Jordan… He faced many adversaries…
(7) Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee:
God’s STRENGTH leads us to have COURAGE…
They go together. And there’s a third component…
It’s God’s Word that equips us with courage.
turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.
(8) This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
(9) Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
Sometimes you just have to step out in faith and have courage.
And underpinning our stand of faith is the Word of God.
Step out on the Word, like Peter did.
The Word is a seed, it has power…
Adoniram Judson was the first modern missionary to depart from America.
He was bold and courageous in his faith.
He spent his life preaching about Jesus in Burma.
When his wife told him that a newspaper article likened him to some of the apostles, Judson replied, “I do not want to be like a Paul… or any mere man.
I want to be like Christ… I want to follow Him only, copy His teachings, drink in His Spirit, [and] place my feet in His footprints… Oh, to be more like Christ!”
It takes courage to aim to be Christlike.
BE STRONG AND TAKE ACTION
As we are strengthened in our faith and walk with the Lord it prompts us TO TAKE ACTION.
Christianity is energised and activated…
- Where is this Strength – this True Strength, found…?
- The Lord strengthens us – to His service.
- He grants us strength – strength of character, strength of resolve, strength of faithfulness.
He makes us strong so we can engage our strength in His service…
…but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.
Where do we find this strength that we need?
We can draw our strength from God’s power.
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
God’s PRESENCE gives us strength.
(29) He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.
(30) Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:
(31) But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
God’s strength works in us to activate us BOTH TO WILL AND TO DO of His own will…
For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
When wealth is lost, nothing is lost;
When health is lost, something is lost;
When character is lost, all is lost.
— Anonymous, Quoted by Ted W. Engstrom in Integrity.
We have a Responsibility…
- In the home and in our community.
- To govern ourselves with strength…
He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.
We have a responsibility to put our Christianity into action every day; to love one another.
We are called TO BE STRONG IN GRACE…
2 Timothy 2:1
Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
Women are made STRONG in the Lord…
Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
Where can we find the source of this power?
The LORD is my strength and song, and is become my salvation.
In Him we can find strength…
- When we face burdens.
- When we face trials.
- When we are stretched and tested…
What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.
The Lord will help us overcome what is hindering our faith.
David also said,
2 Samuel 22:33
God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect.
God wants us to grow to be mature, useful Christians…
Here is a poem, directed at men…
The strength of a man
The strength of a man isn’t in the deep tone of his voice.
It’s in the gentle words he whispers.
The strength of a man isn’t how many buddies he has.
It’s how good a buddie he is with his children.
The strength of a man isn’t in how respected he is at work.
It’s in how respected he is at home.
The strength of a man isn’t in how hard he hits.
It’s in how tender he touches.
The strength in a man isn’t in the hair on his chest.
It’s in his Heart … that lies within his chest.
The strength of a man isn’t in the weight he can lift.
It’s in the burdens he can carry.
What makes a strong man?
Outwardly strength comes from a working of muscles, of discipline.
So, too, spiritually… God is stretching and straining us so we can grow…
Let us pray for strength to endure…
In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul.
We can develop strength through suffering. God is developing our spiritual muscles through the testing and exercise of our faith…
We can develop strength through the Word…
My soul melteth for heaviness: strengthen thou me according unto thy word.
- Take a stand – stand fast in the faith
- Take courage – be a man
- Take action – be strong
Where is our real strength found?
Our source must be God.
He wants to strengthen and empower us.
It is HIS STRENGTH that we need.
Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee…
Lean upon the Lord.
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
