How Can I be Saved?

THE GOSPEL

The word gospel means “good news”.  It is God’s gift of salvation, through the Lord Jesus Christ, by his death on the cross.

Here is the gospel: “Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures… he was buried, and …he rose again the third day…” (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

The Bible shows us: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).  Not any one of us can measure up to God’s holy, perfect standard – not by any efforts of our own we can make.  No works or religion can connect us to God because of the sin barrier.

Our sin has a penalty.  The Bible says “the wages of sin is death…”  Unless Jesus saves us, the judgment of God is against us.  We face the penalty for our sin – which is Hell – a place of eternal punishment and fire.

Yet there is good news – if we will receive it: “…the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23).  The good news for us is that - though guilty, as sinners - God offers his forgiveness and grace to those who will receive his gift of salvation.  Those who believe in Jesus Christ as their Saviour are reconciled to a just and holy God.

Christ died for our sins.  The Lord Jesus is both God (Colossians 2:9) and man (John 1:14).  The Lord Jesus was without sin (1 Peter 2:22), and was the perfect substitute to die in our place, for our sin.

The Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay for our sins.  He suffered our punishment for our sin.  Then he rose from the dead, showing his power over death.

Praying

The Lord Jesus offers His salvation as a free gift.  We can only receive his gift by faith, apart from any works or merit of our own (Ephesians 2:8–9).  By faith, we believe – we place our trust in Jesus Christ as our own Lord and Saviour.

The gospel is “the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth” (Romans 1:16).  God offers the free gift of salvation to all who believe on him.  And when a person trusts in Jesus Christ alone as their Saviour, God saves them and gives them eternal life – and they have this forever.
