Sermon starts at 19m43s. As with the rule for our bishop, this next rule will provide a tremendous opportunity for us as a church to improve in our Biblical literacy concerning this important, but often misunderstood role. For if this house is to be what God desires it to be then we must understand and follow the rule for our deacons.
1 Timothy 3:8a – “Likewise must the deacons…”
Deacons, what are they? Why have them? How do you go about choosing them? What makes one qualified to be a deacon?
All these questions come into one’s mind when the need arises for a church to call forth certain men to fulfil this role. Many of these questions were answered when we looked at Acts 6 (Growing Pains: The Call for Deacons), and saw how a church can experience growing pains as the organism grows, but the organisation is not in place to support its growth. Deacons are part of the organisational structure to support the growth of the organism.
