Job 23:10 but he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall
come forth as gold.
The story is told of a fire that destroyed 2,500 homes in 1991 in California.
When the devastated owners returned and sifted through the black debris, they
found that all their possessions had been reduced to soot. But one man and his
daughter discovered a tiny porcelain rabbit.
They marvelled that so fragile an object had survived intact. Other victims
of that catastrophe also found pottery and porcelain items that had defied the
inferno.
That Sunday after the disaster a local minister carried to his pulpit an unbroken
vase which was the only thing recovered from his home. He asked his congregation,
"Do you know why this is still here and my house is gone?"
He answered his own question by saying, "Because this had passed through
the fire once before."
Can the fiery trials of life actually prove to be a blessing? The apostle Peter
indicated to us that they could. (1 Peter 1:6-7).
Fiery trials may be very painful, but if by God's grace we endure them, our
trust in God can emerge from the blazing furnace purer and stronger than it
was before. Maybe the fires you are going through are to refine you for the
glory of God.
Let's press on toward the high calling in Christ Jesus... Fire refines gold;
adversity refines man. (Selected)

God's World...
Have you ever admired the beauty of a flower or the grace and power of a Bengal
tiger? Have you ever stood upon the shores of an ocean and thought of all the
variety and intricacy of the life that dwells there? Have you ever looked up
into the sky and admired the grace of a bird in flight by day and the awesome
vastness of the heavens by night? Have you ever looked into the eyes of a weeping
child and been struck by the complexity of the human eye? Have you ever listened
to a doctor speak of the wonderment of the human brain and nervous system? Not
to mention the immune system, or the delicateness of the chemistry of the blood
in your veins?
Design most certainly speaks of a Designer! Did your automobile form and assemble
itself? Does the joining of random chunks of steel, which just happened to be
the correct size and shape, suffice to explain its body? What about all the
other hundreds of parts that makes up a functional, operating motor vehicle?
Only a fool would try to convince others that the automobile is self-designing
and self-existent. For you and I both know, through experience, that there are
such things as Motor Companies that have engineers and factory workers that
combine together to design and assemble our cars and trucks. We have seen these
assembly plants. We know they exist and we know their function. They make automobiles!
But Creation is different, in that no human was there to observe it when it
occurred. Creation is an event of the past that cannot be scientifically repeated.
Does this mean it did not actually happen? If someone were not aware of automobile
assembly plants, would he doubt that cars and trucks have a maker?
Consider the complexity of the Universe... Consider the random creation of one
protein molecule. There are about 1500 separate bits of order to the structure
of the simplest protein molecule. The number of steps needed to build the first
'machine' by chance is 1500. The probability of this being achieved by chance
is therefore 10450. More astonishing is the admission of a well-known evolutionist,
Julian Huxley, who said the horse evolved by a "million mutational steps."
Now consider, a million successive, successful steps, each with a probability
of one-half all occurring perfectly from beginning to end would be 10300000.
And this speaks only of the horse!
Now try to fathom the orderly, random, and chance creation of matter, the laws
of nature, stars, galaxies, the solar system, the earth's hydrosphere, lithosphere,
and biosphere and finally the consciousness of humankind all by pure chance
evolution or natural selection.
The supposed age of the Universe would not begin to be enough time for all this
to have occurred.
Let us again consider the automobile. What would the odds be of the random,
chance assembly of your automobile? Let us take it apart one piece at a time
and place each part neatly on the ground in close proximity to one another.
Now let us sit back and wait for your vehicle to assemble itself. Silly? Yes!
I know, let us kindly help it along by throwing them all into a giant container,
in their engineered and predetermined correct order, along with some glue, nuts,
and bolts and shake the container each time the next item is added. Then remove
the product of your labour. Do you see a functional automobile? Would you expect
to see a functional automobile? Hardly! And is not the Universe many times more
complex?
Reason contradicts evolutionary theory.
Even evolutionists do not interpret the human artefacts that they find as anything
other than made and designed by intelligence and purpose. It seems strange that
they choose to interpret the orderly physical world around them differently
than the orderly world of human affairs. But that is the way hardened unbelief
affects our judgments. The irrational is accepted as possible and true... No
one can defend himself or herself by saying, "I did not know that a God
exists." The universe and world around us scream of such a God... Receive
the Lord Jesus into your heart as you believe that He died for you and will
forgive you. (James W. Skeen, Florida)

Stop Being a Slacko...
I would seriously urge every reader to consider his or her standing before the
Lord Jesus.
I have been privileged now to have been shepherding a group of God's people
here at Elizabeth South Australia for over 4 years. We have seen the Lord bless
with different ones trusting Christ and committing to serve.
It has been my sad observation about how many folk claim to be Christians and
yet do not fellowship regularly with other believers or make some trifling reason
an excuse not to fellowship. They are missing out terribly on being able to
minister and serve the Lord. And they are depriving others of their gifts and
abilities. If you are one of the many people who I know who is not fellowshipping
regularly with God's people I urge you, in the light of the Judgment seat of
Christ, to GET IN FELLOWSHIP!!!
I urge every reader: find a solid Bible believing church in your area and support
your local preacher 100%. Andrew Craig
Ten Little Christians
10 Little Christians standing in line,
One disliked the preacher, then there were 9
9 little Christians stayed up very late;
One overslept Sunday, then there were 8
8 little Christians on their way to Heaven;
One took the low road and then there were 7
7 little Christians chirping like chicks;
One disliked music, then there were 6
6 little Christians seemed very much alive;
But one lost his interest then there was 5
5 little Christians pulling for Heaven's Shore;
But one stopped to rest, then there were 4
4 little Christians each busy as a bee;
One got his feelings hurt, then there were 3
3 little Christians knew not what to do;
One joined the sporty crowd, then there were 2
2 little Christians, our rhyme is nearly done;
Differed with each other, then there was 1
1 little Christian can't do much 'tis true;
Brought his friend to bible study- - then there were 2
2 earnest Christians, each won one more,
That doubled the number, then there were 4
4 sincere Christians worked early and late, Each won another then there were
8
8 splendid Christians if they doubled as before; In just so many Sundays, we'd

A reader... On the Road for
God
We have had a busy but fruitful year... making contacts with the farmers out
on the cattle stations. The response has been cautious, with some friendly and
a couple hostiles. The JW people have made inroads in the areas we have called
upon so far and we know this will take a couple more visits to let them know
our message is different to the JW teaching. The area we intend to contact is
quite a vast one and it will be some months before we contact the same people
again. Our prayer is that we will hear from the Lord where to go to prepared
hearts and not just idly go from property to property with no real direction.
In one day we can cover some 300-km and see about 10 properties.
The world scene is rapidly changing with the various events heard and seen over
the News. Those of us who know the Lord can see that our Salvation is drawing
closer to Jesus' return and we need to get the Message out. Many have not bothered
about Eternity, as until recently it has been the "easy life" but
much is closing in on people now. (Kevin & Edna, Barcaldine, Qld)
Is "The Message" right?
The Book of Acts is a history of the early church that spans roughly thirty
years, and in that history book you cannot find the word Love mentioned even
once. This should convince us of at least two things: (1) people were not driving
around the streets with God Loves You bumper stickers on the back of their chariots,
and (2) personal evangelism did not consist of telling sinners that God loves
them and has a wonderful plans for their lives. (Which by the way is not a spiritual
law.)
The central message of the Book of Acts is "Repent therefore and be converted
that your sins may be blotted out" (Acts 3:19). There is no example in
this book of a main character going into a city and announcing that he has come
to proclaim or share the love of God with anyone. They obviously did not use
this approach because they did not consider it the primary message of the cross.

Some Feedback from Readers...
What a tragedy that 'professing Christians' have such a humanistic attitude
towards the Word of God. Thank you for standing for OLD-FASHIONED CHRISTIANITY
and not for post-modern Christianity!!

Thank you for doing such a great job of providing so much information...it is
very helpful, especially to a newer Christian like myself.

Thoughts on Church & Ministry...
The church meets for teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, singing praises
and worshiping God and prayer. For the equipping (encouraging) of the saints
for the work of service to the building up of the body of Christ (Eph 4:11,
12)... Each Christian is a Member with his or her individual gift function (1
Cor 12)... involved in some sort of service... There is the priesthood of every
Believer (1 Peter 2:5,9). We are living sacrifices to God, as we give ourselves
to ministry to others through our spiritual gifts (Hebrews 13:15). Praise and
Thanksgiving is another form of Spiritual Sacrifice (Hebrews 13:16). Also, Sacrifice
of service (doing good and sharing with others) (1 Pet. 2:9), proclaiming the
goodness and greatness of God, and the Gospel. Each member comes to be strengthened
edified and encouraged by other members of the body.
Ministry includes Practical and Spiritual Service. Prayer, encouragement, strengthening
in the faith, building up individuals which in turn builds up the body of Christ,
as well as meeting practical needs, housework, bringing in meals, driving church
bus to transport children to and from church, cleaning the church building,
anything that benefits other members (1 Cor.12:4-7, for common good). Most Christians
think that if they are not teaching, preaching, or counselling, that what they
have to offer is of little or no value. They don't realise that meeting needs
of the poor is defined in Scripture as a ministry. The sick need comfort, encouragement
and prayer (not so much a sermon). (Helena, Parafield Gdns, SA: commenting on:
"Sharpening The Focus Of The Church" by Gene Getz)
Mary is proclaimed the "Mother of the Church" by Pope Paul VI 1965
AD.
(Knowledge of Truth Ministries)
Note: Bible believers do not venerate Mary. She is a sinner saved by grace who
was blessed to give birth to our Lord, and only He deserves our prayer and worship.

Worldly Living
I am one of the few who have abandoned the entertainment industry of TV and
movies for the sake of Christ. I did not abandon it because I thought it was
corrupting me, but merely because it was a hindrance to my Bible reading and
prayer time. I found that every time I wanted to read my Bible or pray I had
to limit my time in order to watch my TV shows. Therefore, with this out of
the way, I had more time on my hands for God. However, at this time, I began
to realise the influence that the media had previously had on me, so I abandoned
TV and movies.
I found that my relationship with Christ drastically grew. What I had come to
realise is how powerful the allurement of TV and movies had been in my life.
. . And, well, their undeniable corrupting effects on me as a Christian. People
often do not realise the effect something has on their lives until they abandon
it. Here are a few facts I have received from a theologian who specialises in
pop-culture. The statistics can be found at Barna Research Online:
The other day, we had Songs of Praise (chapel) here in college, but to my
surprise, two-thirds of the chapel was empty because no one wanted to miss the
next episode of 'Survivor.' Some common things that I've noticed among most
Christians here are these: they all play video games, watch TV and movies, stay
up until 2 a.m., listen to 'Christian' heavy metal/punk music, like to prank
people at night, listen to secular music over Christian music, seek to be popular
and known among their brethren, but avoid-gently and subtly-the low-class.
I relate these as easily observable facts, not as a way to feel good about myself
by bashing others. I love these people and wish for them to be good witnesses
of Christ. One thing I must say is that I am distraught by this emerging generation.
Colossians 3:2: 'Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.'"

An Old Dusty Book
Home to a crib, Much love, a proud mum
Pretty pictures, toys
And an old dusty book.
Starting school, it was fun, Much to learn, Games to play, New mates to make
Even with homework to do, life is good
The room's full of toys
And an old dusty book.
Well, growing up, it was good
Lots of cricket and footy, Met a girl,
Thoughts of future, Still lounging at home,
Own room with a bed, lots of trophies
And an old dusty book.
Married with kids, good wife and a car
Bit of a mortgage
Just built a bar near TV in the lounge
With Gran's Royal Doulton
And an old dusty book.
Now in the twilight, bones a bit stiff
Grand kids they run a bit faster this year
Just getting old, but satisfied with it all,
Been a good man, one of the blokes
Always been one for a beer and a joke
Built a good rep about town,
And at home with all mod cons
And a dusty old book,
Must read that one day,
Been under foot forever.
Get off to bed now, but needing some help
With the missus now gone
Nurse comes around, tucked into bed.
Woke up in darkness, Something is wrong,
Can't take a breath, In hot stinking air,
Screams they abound
Hot coals stick to flesh, Flames roar high
Those screams they are yours
Terrible pain, molten rock,
And no old dusty book. (Jim, Pt Lincoln, SA)
Calvary
Have you been today to Calvary? Have you seen the Saviour slain? Have you noted
that
it was for you, His suffering, agony and pain? Your sins and mine hung upon
that cross; repent now and believe, Put your faith and trust in Him alone, His
abundant life receive. (Kevin, Ingham, Qld)
Resting in the Lord
I am in this home receiving palliative treatment as I have terminal cancer in
both lungs. I thank God for His wonderful blessings at this time, and am resting
in the knowledge that He is in control of my life, and that He will take me
home to Glory in His own time.
I thank Him that I have no fear, no pain and very little discomfort.
Until that time when He takes me Home,
I look forward to receiving your magazine.
You may inform your readers that, contrary to the modern thinking, I have no
intention of taking my own life, and that I oppose "Mercy" killing.
I have my mercy from God and God alone. (Pete, Charters Towers, Qld)
12 Years Down the Tube...
TV is worse than smoking argues Jack Taylor, writing in the New Oxford Review.
After citing statistics on cigarettes' reducing life expectancy, Taylor noted,
"Television, on the other hand, robs us of time here and now, not at the
end of our days. Given that the average American views 26 hours of TV per week,
we can expect to lose about 12 years of our lives to the tube - 50 percent more
time than a pack-a-day smoker would lose....When television becomes a main communicator
of values in the home, children learn immodesty, premature sexualization, crudeness,
violence and materialism
(The Baptist Bulletin 5/02)
Testimony...
One of my many problems was that I would compulsively pull out my hair and had
huge bald spots. A friend over the internet... talked to me about Jesus and
my personal need for Him as my Saviour. At first, I called him a hypocrite and
was angry that he would try and tell me that I was not a perfectly acceptable
and good person...
in the end... I realised that I really was a terrible sinner. I looked at myself
and saw all the filth and failures and I could even see that I was very angry
toward God and hated Him...I took the bible and started to read Romans. As I
read I pulled out my hair ceaselessly until I finally got up to around chapter
7/8 and suddenly knew what to do. I got up from my bed and knelt down to pray
and ask Jesus to come into my life and save me. When I was done I got back onto
my bed and kept reading Romans, but this time I did not pull out my hair and
I was healed.
I was very happy and I still am! I am full of joy and glad that I will never
go back to that person I was because I am in Christ and a new creature with
all the old things passed away. (Jenn, Kamloops, BC, Canada)
Comments: Church-Shopping
Christians have become shoppers - religious consumers who instead of seeking
to plug into a body of believers and stick with it, making it a better place,
simply flit from one church to another, much like we flip through television
channels with the remote control. (Bill Muehlenberg)
Modern Baal Worship!
Why is it that Christians actively worship professional base-baal, basket-baal,
foot-baal; when these are the very tools that Satan has used to keep people
out of the House of God on Sunday? "Vanity of vanities saith the preacher..."
We need to clean up our homes, our pulpits, our churches and then we can pray
to Heaven and God will heal our land!
(Bro Johnny, USA) (Note: "Baal" was an idol of the pagan Canaanites.)
Honouring God with our Music
The Bible teaches, in 1 John 2:15-16 and James 4:4, that Christians are to be
separate and distinct from the things of the world. God says, "Be not conformed
to this world... (Romans 12.2)"
True spiritual music is based upon melody, which feeds the spirit. The world's
music is based upon rhythm, predominantly drums and bass guitars, which feeds
the flesh. (Hughie, Cairns,Qld)
Honouring God with our Appearance...
The outside should reflect the inside.
As someone said "come as you are but leave as He is". If we really
understood how obnoxious the world is in God's sight we wouldn't want a worldly
appearance.
(Chris, Adelaide, SA)
God's Creation...
The theory of evolution is a logic that is mistaken for evidence and therefore
misused as being a scientific fact." (David, Elizabeth, SA)
On Christian Giving...
Money is a stewardship to be wisely used and invested... Every individual is
to consider how much he will set aside for giving (2 Cor 8:12). Paul said we
are to give out of what we have not what we do not have. There are benefits
of Christian giving: it's a blessing to others, it expresses our love for them
in Jesus Christ.
It's God's way of providing for the needs of His people. It is an expression
of the unity of the body of Christ. It brings praise to God, especially from
the one who is ministered to (2 Cor 9: 12-13). It's a great blessing to the
giver knowing he has been God's instrument to minister to His own and has the
opportunity to see God provide for his own needs because of his generosity.
There is joy in giving. It is better to give than to receive. It shows and demonstrates
the love of Jesus. (Helena, Parafield Gdns, SA: comment on: Gene Getz' book,
Sharpening The Focus Of The Church)
Quotable
This generation can only reach this generation.
A little thing is a little thing, but faithfulness in a little thing is a great
thing. - Hudson Taylor,
99.9 percent of the Middle East lands are controlled by Muslim countries today.
Israel controls only one-tenth of one percent. (Samuele Bacchiocchi, MI, USA)
Comments: God as Friend
When ' What a Friend we have in Jesus' is played or sang - the words themselves
are a great sermon of the trust we can have in the Lord... The elderly... need
to be reassured of God's love and the trust that they can have in Him. (Joan,
Perth, W.A.)
Comments on the church scene...
X Baptist church is a small congregation of about two families and a handful
of older persons. The service consisted of the pastor reading out word for word
a lengthy and boring sermon written in 1962 and that was it. Nothing else, except
3 hymns and a prayer... Another church we went to recently they sat for 1 1/2
hours and listened to an old Ian Paisley preaching tape. That's fine to do at
home or in the car but in church you come to hear what the Spirit has to say
right now, not 30 years ago even if it was good preaching.
At some churches we have visited (such as XX Baptist) the church members were
asked in the evening service to relate any testimonies or relevant things that
happened to them and my goodness - there was this old lady going on and on about
her weekly shopping and how God provided the closest car park for her etc.
We went to XXX Baptist... many of the people seemed nice but it was all rather
formal with black suited guys marching around with utmost precision and all
done to a rigid code. That wouldn't be a problem if the sermon had some substance
but it was really lacking - at least the one we heard - and I have no hesitation
saying that, we found it hard to believe the Pastor actually pre-prepared it
at all as he claimed. I'm sure you could do better in 10 minutes with no preparation
time at all.
(Roving reporters: Chris & Nisha, Adelaide, SA)
God has chosen...
It is very encouraging to hear how the Lord is blessing your ministry in down
town Adelaide.
My opinion is that the Lord is more interested in the 'weak things' of this
world (1 Cor. 1:27) than in those that are intelligent, strong and rich. Here
in the UK there are many prisoners coming to know the Lord but not too many
vicars, priests or intellectuals! (David, London)
Misunderstood and Misused...
"Speaking in tongues" is a much misused and misunderstood subject.
What is its purpose? "For a sign", for the benefit of "them that
believe not" (1 Cor. 14:22). This sign is to "this people" (Isa
28:11; cf 1 Cor. 14:21) - the Jews. In AD70 God's judgment came, it was all
over red rover - they had no more temple, sacrifices, nation, etc. Tongues also
disappeared from off the map. God had used the sign. It had done its work. Finito.
Tongues "shall cease"; full stop, end of story, period. History tells
us it did cease, and therefore it has ceased. Tongues churches have been off-beam
way back from the pioneer days at Azusa Street. See: FD #50 and 57, www.discernment.org/ologians.php
, and www.cultlink.com/sentinel/gods-generals.php
Concerning Healing...
As believers we still pray for the sick. We don't emphasise it as some churches
mistakenly do, If a person wants prayer, they call... seek prayer, etc., and
are prayed for. (Jas. 5:14) - and believing prayer can work wonders. I believe
that it may not always be God's will to heal, however, and we must submit to
His will. (Ed)
Concerning Alcohol...
It is often harmful, addictive and destructive... I've seen alcohol's fruits,
with the recent death of a friend; his body ravaged by drink, and his family
estranged from him. I've seen the damage in families torn apart by its awful
effects, on virtually a daily basis. Plus the poor testimony of those who indulge
in a drink, and their generally worldly and uncommitted ways, despite claims
of following Christ. I would steer away from that which causes such misery and
heartache. The fruits of the alcohol industry are patently evident. It is better
to abstain for the sake of another, as did Paul (Rom. 14:21). (Ed)
