The Move is on!

John Wesley, the great 18th Century preacher said: "Give me a hundred men who love God with all their hearts, and fear nothing but sin, and I will move the world." Are you one of the hundred? (Les, Toowoomba, Qld)

What does the future have in store for you? The choice is yours alone.

Live for today. Do what you want. If it feels good do it. Who needs God anyway, even if He does exist? Isn't all that stuff about God obsolete? Don't we cease to exist when we die? Aren't we people today much smarter than previous generations who believed in God and all that "junk"? Drugs, "FREE" sex, partying, alcohol, sport, gambling, channelling, modern "music", making money, etc.; aren't these the things that really matter? Shouldn't we put all our energy, time and money into these things? What IS life all about anyway?

The foregoing sums up the thinking of many people today. Satan and his cohorts have so blinded the (spiritual) eyes of so many people so that they cannot see; deafened their (spiritual) ears that they cannot hear and hardened their (spiritual) hearts, that they do not believe and act upon the REAL truth.

The TRUTH is of course, that God DOES exist. He designed and created the stars, the planets, this earth, people, animals, birds, fish, reptiles, trees, plants, etc. He alone is the CAUSE and SUSTAINER of ALL life, both spiritual and physical. The Bible states clearly, "The fool says in his heart that there is NO GOD". All who refuse God's offer of LOVE and MERCY now will receive His judgment at the appointed time- and will suffer ETERNALLY in the LAKE of FIRE (Rev. 14:9-11, 21:8, 19:20, 20:10-15).

What does the future have in store for you? The choice is yours alone.

Numbering Our Years

God allows us seventy years and some beyond.

"What is our life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time and then vanisheth away" (James 4:14).
(Facts for Faith)

What matters

Many things we think matter, but in heaven they matter not. It's the little things we do for one another that really matter. Those things that are done, out of our hearts, unnoticed by others, unannounced, receiving no reward here. But in heaven, our real home, then we're rewarded. Our Father sees the quiet things we do in secret.

How well do we see what's really important here on earth- or have other things taken our thoughts? What do we put our minds upon? What do we fill our thoughts with? Others are watching and reading us like a book. Do we live like these are our last days, thankful and praising God?

Do we cherish each other, thinking more highly of one another than ourselves, as He does? Do we treasure His presence and that of His children? Do we walk in the light as He is in the light, and freely give our lives for others? Do we go by what we see or by the unseen? (Aaron Vio, Washington, USA)

In A Lunatic Asylum... Them God Intervened

Several years ago I was diagnosed as an incurable, chronic Paranoid Schizophrenic, certified insane, and incarcerated in what was then called a Lunatic Asylum. As a result of long-term usage of high-dosage Modecate and numerous other medications that were required to control my schizophrenia and prevent me turning psychotic, I developed the incurable condition named Tardine Dyskinesia. I faced a lifetime of suffering. The medical profession could help me no further, but could only help me control it. I was told that I'd require all the medications I was on for the remainder of my life.

God (Who I did not know at the time,) had other ideas and plans for me. I was told I'd never work again. I found tremendous difficulty in thinking straight, making sensible conversation, understanding others when they spoke, or their actions. I could barely see, as the medications totally blurred my vision. I lost all motivation, and the ability to do anything. I made repeated attempts to kill myself. I wanted out.

Then God intervened, as a result of the prayers of a few friends, and my mother, and totally healed me. In the twelve years since then, I have not ever been back to any psychiatrist or medical practitioner for anything to do with mental illness or its associated areas, and I've never again required any medications at all for anything to do with such.

I've become a Christian, have held down responsible positions caring for those who cannot care for themselves, have obtained my driver's licence, am actively involved in our local church, and am coping better than I ever did with life. I am now doing things I've never ever before been able to do. Who else but God could take my life and turn it right around. Who else but God could remove my torment and anguish, and replace it with His peace, healing, contentment, and joy. God took someone who was virtually useless to herself, her family, and anyone else, and made her into an active, contributing member of society.

There is no way I could ever repay Him for what He's done for me, except to give Him totally what remains of my life, time, talents, and all else, to be used of and by Him, however, wherever, and whenever He chooses. (Leonie, Medina, WA)

Tips To Look After Your Husband

Have Dinner Ready: Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal on time. This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospects of a good meal are part of the warm welcome needed.

Prepare Yourself: Take 15 minutes rest so you will be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your make-up, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people. Be lively and a little more interesting. His boring day may need a lift.

Clear away the Clutter: Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives, gathering up the school books, toys, paper, etc. Then rust a dust cloth over the tables. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too.

Prepare the Children: Take a few minutes to wash the children's hands and faces (if they are small), comb their hair, and if necessary, change their clothes. They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part.

Minimise all Noise: At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer, dishwasher or vacuum. Try to encourage the children to be quiet. Be happy to see him. Greet him with a warm smile and be glad to see him.

Some Don'ts: Don't greet him with problems or complaints. Don't complain if he's late for dinner. Count this a minor matter, compared with what he might have gone through that day.

Make him Comfortable: Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or suggest he lie down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him. Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soft, soothing and pleasant voice. Allow him to relax- unwind.

Listen to him: You may have a dozen things to tell him, but the moment of arrival is not the time. Let him talk first.

Make the Evening his: Never complain if he doesn't take you out to dinner or to other places of entertainment. Instead try to understand his world of strain and pressure, his need to stay home and relax.

The Goal: Try to make your home a place of peace and order where your husband can renew himself in body and spirit.

Suppose it's true after all! What then?

Suppose it is true after all that God would punish sin? How would you stand before Him? What could you say to Him? How would you fare before the Judge? "Because He hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in righteousness by that Man Whom He hath ordained" (Acts 17:31).

Suppose it is true after all that Hell is a reality? A skeptic sneeringly asked, "Where is Hell?" The ready and true answer came: "At the end of a Christ-rejecting life". Let me ask you: What lies at the end of the path you are now treading? The Scripture says, "It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this is the judgment" (Heb. 9:27).

Suppose it is true after all that the Lord Jesus is the only Saviour and His death the only means by which you can be fitted for God's presence? What if you neglect Him? "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?" (Heb. 2:3)

Suppose it is true after all that the blood of Jesus is the only thing that can cleanse you from your sins? Has it cleansed you before God, or are you still in your sins, going on at a frightful pace to the eternity of the lost? "The blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin" (1 Jn. 1:7).

Suppose it is true after all! If it were all untrue, the believer has the best of it in this world, and is no worse off in the next. But if it is true after all, how terrible will be your doom if you "die in your sins" (Jn. 8:21). Believe and receive Christ, and be saved. "Whosoever was not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the Lake of Fire" (Rev. 20:15). Be assured that it is true and act upon it.

(Selected, from a tract)

A simple layman, armed with the Scriptures, is to be believed above a pope or a cardinal without them (Martin Luther).

Saying it like it is

Brother, we are at the end. Jesus is coming soon. The devil is in top gear trying to deceive the very elect- not just the Jewish elect, but the church, the Bride of Christ. Deception is on every hand. 2 T. 3:12 is obvious today- so are verses 1-5!

I believe God does heal- I've proved that. But He does not heal all, and never has. The lives of His children are in His hands. It gives Him pleasure when we can truly say, "Thy will be done". He has every right to make the decision. He is sovereign. Our joy comes from obedience to His Word and His will.

I don't see revival in Scripture for our day (after the rapture- Rev. 7:9-14, yes)- but there is, and will be, pockets of revival where His conditions are met. And as Jacob Prasch says, it will be in the Third World and dark races, more than the Western world. We have turned to fables.

All born again believers have been baptised in the Holy Spirit- He is a Person. We cannot have more of Him! BUT- He can have more of us! (Br Ron, Murray Bridge, SA)

Wanted: Backbone People

What our church needs are more people with the right kind of bones. There are at least four different types around most churches:

Wishbone People.
They hope for, they long for,
They wish for and sigh;
They want things to be done
But aren't willing to try.

Funnybone People.
They laugh, grin, and giggle,
And twinkle the eye;
If work were a joke,
They would give it a try.

Jawbone People.
They scold, jaw and sputter;
They froth, rave, and cry;
They're long on the talk
But short on the try.

Backbone People.
They strike from the shoulder,
They never say die;
They're the winners in life,
Since they're willing to try.

It's a Fact

You cannot pray the Lord's Prayer
And even once say "I".
You cannot pray the Lord's Prayer
And even once say "My"
Nor can you pray the Lord's Prayer
And not pray for another
For when you ask for daily bread
You must include your brother.
For others are included
In each and every plea
From the beginning to the end of it
It does not once say, "Me".

"Shock Absorbers"

Awful roads! Potholes! What's worse, our driver didn't miss one of them; and to top it all off, our old van had no shock absorbers! It was a sanctifying experience!

If you think you're having a rough time, listen: "stoned.. shipwrecked.. grave dangers from mobs.. false brethren.. pain and weariness.. sleepless nights.. hungry and thirsty.. shivering with cold" (2 Cor. 11:25-27).

How did he do it? He had shock absorbers for the potholes of life! Here are just a few of them:

  1. Total dependence on God! "The less I have, the more I depend on Him" (2 Cor. 12:10).
  2. Continual praise. "In everything give thanks" (1 Th. 5:18). Note: he didn't say "for" everything, but rather "in" everything! That's why he could sing praise in prison and bring on an earthquake.
  3. Dying to self! (Self centred living.) "I die daily" (1 Cor. 15:31). You can't hurt a dead man!
  4. An abiding sense of God's presence! "Nothing shall separate us from the love of God" (Rom. 8:39).

All these are shock absorbers. Use them!
(The Word for Today)

Reasons to Be There!
  1. We are commanded to gather together (Heb. 10:25).
  2. God speaks to His people when they assemble (Neh. 8:1-8, Ac. 2:41-47).
  3. Hearing the Word of God cleanses our lives (corrective) and keeps us from sin (preventative)
    (Ps. 119:9-11, 33-40, 133; Eph. 5:26-27).
  4. It is an opportunity to find comfort in trial (Ps. 119:41, 49-50, 52, 76; Rom. 15:4).
  5. It is an opportunity to encourage others (Ps. 119:74, 1 Th. 5:11).
  6. The Lord Jesus has promised to be there (Mt. 18:20).

News

First it was the Toronto Blessing. Now Vineyard churches have birthed another abomination. The Promise Keepers is an ecumenical men's movement. The Promise Keepers is so ecumenical that Catholics and Mormons are actively part of it. (The Grapevine, 7/96)

70-80% of all church growth in the US is "transfer" growth, or movement of Christians from one church to another. (Uplook, 4/96)

8,000 Catholics are escaping to freedom in Christ daily. Tens of thousands of Latin American Bible believers have been driven into refugee camps for converting from Catholicism. (BF, 7/96)

Unwanted, aborted babies are described by the medical term "uterine material". (Uplook, 4/96)

The AOG in the UK is badly divided and nearly bankrupt. Our conferences have dropped from 8,000 to about 1,500 in the last several years. Many churches will no longer subscribe to the AOG magazine because they consider it a hype sheet and a tabloid. More than half the AOG ministers never even attend Regional meetings or the conferences, and a growing number of AOG churches refuse to pay any money into the central fund out of frustration and disgust. Many of our ministers were sickened by such spectacles as... our recently retired General Superintendent laying down on the floor in a drunken style unable to address the conference day after day. (Jacob Prasch, UK)

The Lord is blessing in China. Communist leaders are being converted. They are wonderful Christians, having been trained in "commitment". Bibles are being delivered, and pastors secretly trained by Open Doors Ministry. (Sis Willmann, Kingaroy, Qld)

Buddhist, Scientologist, and Mormon writings are now appearing in hotel rooms alongside Gideon Bibles. 2,500 hotels carry "The Teachings of Buddha". The Church of Scientology have placed 90,000 copies of "The Way to Happiness" in 350 hotels. Mary Baker Eddy's writings and the Book of Mormon are also appearing in hotel rooms. (CVN, 7/96)

Gone are the hymnals. They are considered too boring, too doctrinal, and too restrained. Instead there's the mantra-like repetition of contemporary worship. Music and church life now mimics popular culture and its television programming. It's what the people want and what makes them feel good. Christian musician, Michael Card, says of the "Christian music industry that "the direction and value system are getting worse faster than any of us can imagine". (CVN, 7/96)

Fairy tales, myths, and fictitious stories present ideas which can mislead children. They impart false views of life and foster a desire for the unreal. (Selected)

Redefining the Gospel

A significant ecumenical document, signed by several key evangelical leaders, called "Evangelicals and Catholics Together" (ECT), promotes Protestant-Catholic unity. "Evangelicals and Catholics are brothers and sisters in Christ." "Christians" are defined as: "All who accept Christ as Lord and Savior" regardless of how He is actually known, understood, or embraced. If this be the case, then there is no reason why Freemasons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Moonies, Mormons, etc, should not be included for they too accept Christ in their own respective ways. (Based on Bethel Weekly 5/96)

Unity with idol-worshippers

Prominent evangelicals are increasingly supporting the Pope. Is this a last days phenomenon? Is it a precursor to a global organisation fulfilling the prophecy of Rev. 13:8: "And all that dwell on the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb"? The End Time Church will be caught away in a massive "falling away" (2 Th. 2:3). Its leaders will be so deceived by the father of lies that they will believe the untruth (2 Th. 2:11).

The German minister of Propaganda espoused this diabolical doctrine: "Tell a lie often enough, and people will believe it." "tell it from the highest levels and people will believe it." (Based on Bethel Weekly, 5/96)

This Moment

He's helping me now this moment,
Though I may not see it or hear,
Perhaps by a friend far distant,
Perhaps by a stranger near,
Perhaps by a spoken message,
Perhaps by the printed word;
In ways that I know and know not,
I have the help of the Lord.

He's keeping me now - this moment,
However I need Him most,
Perhaps by a single angel,
Perhaps by a mighty host,
Perhaps by the chain that frets me,
Or the walls that shut me in;
In ways that I know and know not,
He keeps me from harm and sin.

He's guiding me now - this moment,
In pathways easy or hard,
Perhaps by a door wide open,
Perhaps by a door fast barred,
Perhaps by a joy witholden,
Perhaps by a gladness given;
In ways that I know and know not,
He's leading me up to Heaven.

He's using me now - this moment,
And whether I go or stand,
Perhaps by a plan accomplished,
Perhaps when He stays my hand,
Perhaps by a word in season,
Perhaps by a silent prayer;
In ways that I know and know not,
His labour of love I share.

Out there Doing it

At present I stand with a friend alongside the GPO every Tuesday morning. (That's about the limit of my 75-year old endurance.) Between us we hand out 250 tracts. I try to write a new one every week. So long as I can manage to do so we will be able to stay in the same place.

I am delighted to be able to tell you that many of the same people take them week after week. For example, yesterday, I was standing alone because my friend is seriously ill in the QEH (Hospital), a young mini-skirted woman crossed the path to take one. She asked me where Joan was. She went on to tell me that she had taken one every week, and how she enjoyed reading them, even though she does not attend church! Four other women asked me about Joan! One man came up from the city to see me for counselling and prayer. A long distance truck driver who had taken one later phoned me with thanks and encouragement.

There is another side- which can be scary- I believe that somewhere in Adelaide there is a satanist church, because occasionally someone appears out of a crowd and snatches a tract out of my hand. He then stands in front of me, eyes blazing with satanic hatred, and tears the tract into tiny bits. When it first happened, I confess to some fear, but not anymore, because in answer to prayer the Lord has taken away all my sense of fear. Even more, He has given me power in the name of Jesus, to overcome these satanic manifestations. Praise God! I long to see more and more people getting involved in this work. (John, Smithfield, SA)

The third verse of Australia's national anthem says:

With Christ our Head and cornerstone,
We'll build our nation's might;
Whose way and truth and light alone
Can guide our path aright;
Our lives a sacrifice of love,
Reflect our Master's care
With faces turned to heav'n above
Advance Australia Fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair!

A Statement of Faith

I am saved, justified, baptised, sanctified, mollified, occupied, satisfied, and fortified; with the believers identified and with the Body of Christ unified, but in no way sectified. My spirit is vivified, my soul clarified, my heart purified, and my body rectified. God is glorified, Christ is magnified, the angels are gratified, the Word of God is verified, to which the Holy Spirit it certified, by the church ratified, to which the saints testified.

The devil is horrified, evil spirits are terrified, hypocrites are mortified, sinners are mystified, by the false brethren I am vilified, by the unbelievers falsified, and by the professors minified; they all wish that I were crucified, petrified, fossified, vitrified, mummified, and dummified; they say I say I am fanatified, rantified and stuntified, but you are all notified that blessings are multiplied, and I am pacified, happified, jollified, edified, solidified, electrified, dignified, beautified, fruitified, and intensified by the Holy Ghost.

Christ in me is personified and signified, also I am being qualified to be glorified when Jesus comes. Not only this but I am specified to be a king and priest unto God, and reign a thousand years.
(J.M. Vaden, Tennessee, USA, written in 1926)

What to Give

The best thing to give your enemy is forgiveness;
to an opponent, tolerance;
to a friend, your heart;
to your child, a good example;
to a father, deference;
to a mother, conduct that will make her proud of you;
to yourself, respect;
to all people, charity.
(Pulpit Helps)

Living out your faith

Jim McKernan, Christian artist, reports that an exhibition of his works has been held in Mount Gambier, and even reported on TV. Well done, Jim.

The purpose of Christianity is not to avoid difficulty, but to produce a character adequate to meet it when it comes. It does not make life easy; rather it tries to make us great enough for life. (James Christensen)

There is no hope, security and future outside Jesus Christ. God is revealing to me what faith is all about. We are to completely trust Him, and hang on and look unto Jesus Christ. (Ken, Murray Bridge, SA)

The primary question to ask in all tragedies is not "Why?", but "What?- Lord, what are You saying in this?" Always He speaks to us in His love, however painful the experience may be at the time (Rom. 8:28). (David Watson, Wholeness)

Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. What about our western church of today? Where is the persecution, the pain, and the suffering? With godly living being ignored by so many leaders, who lives godly? We were called to suffer for the sake of the Gospel. The saints of the church of the Lord were burned at the stake, thrown to the lions, placed into hollow logs and sawn in half. The price we have to pay as Christians born again in the Western countries is small indeed when measured by the agony of many who still suffer for the Name of the Lord in countries where to witness can mean at best gaol, at worst, death! (Gwen, Wheelers Hill, Vic)

Advice to New Converts

Young converts should be taught that unless they have renounced ownership of all their possessions, and of themselves, and that if they have not done this they are not Christians. They should not be left to think that anything is their own; their property, influence, faculties, body and soul. "You are not your own" (1 Cor. 6:19).; they belong to God and when submitted to God they make free surrender of all to Him to be ruled of and disposed of at His pleasure. They have no right to spend one hour as if their time were their own; no right to go anywhere or do anything for themselves, but should hold all at the disposal of God, and employ all for the glory of God. (Charles Finney; 85% of all converts were full of the zeal of God ten years after being saved at revival meetings.)

Disney gets it wrong

Pocahontas, the Disney film about the Indian maid and Capt. John Smith of the Jamestown colony, depicted Pocahontas as having a nature-loving worship of peaceful and wise earth spirits until greedy white men arrived on the scene.

The real Pocahontas, however, left a bloody, sacrifice-demanding Indian religion to become a Christian. The Indians around Jamestown, according to Capt. Smith's diary, worshiped a "chief god" called "OKE", who required a yearly sacrifice of 15 boys between the ages of 10 and 15, in return for blessing the tribe's hunting, fishing, and husbandry. (Midnight Messenger)

Is it Hype- or the Real Thing?

Many churchgoers today are only interested in "The Moment". If a good word is preached this Sunday, "Wow, what a moment!" If the band and hype are here this Sunday, "You beauty! What a moment!" For the next six days they swear, booze, commit adultery, and rip each other off in business, gossip, tell lies, and leave Christ out.

The "church" has gone down to the very pits. Pastors with an arm eight foot long pat themselves on the back, or proclaim, "Gimme that microphone, it's not yours, it's mine". Others connive to extract more money while the little single mother with three children in the second row of their own church goes without food or clothing, because she can't manage with her power bills, gas, phone, etc. Who helps her? As Christians we ought to do a lot more for our own people, in our own country, and in our own church body.

The "church" is sick. The leaders blow whistles, cow horns, and trumpets, and wave flags and streamers. How long is the Word preached? Just seven minutes. The self proclaimed "International Pastor" is coining half a million a year, and paying himself $50,000 a year, plus a car, plus phones, plus lunches, expenses, and overseas trips, all to the tune of $50-60,000 a year in air fares, etc. Jesus said to be humble. No food parcels for the poor in this church. (Rod Bond, Morphett Vale, SA)

The World's Most Urgent Need

A Jewish proverb reads, "God could not be everywhere, and therefore He made mothers".

When 600 university students were asked to write on a piece of paper the most beautiful word in the English language, 422 wrote the word mother; 112 wrote home.

In an ideal home, the mother has a bountiful ministry. She conducts a university, a clothing establishment, a laundry, and a restaurant. At the same time, she is police, health, and truant officer. She is president of a little state called "home" where she has to face all the problems of the economy. As president of a bank, she must study how to make ends meet. She is God's greatest preacher, the most effective teacher, indispensable companion.

You ask me what is the most urgent need in the world today, and I reply, without hesitancy, "Mothers". The babysitters are doing the best they can, but they can never substitute for mothers.

Let wives and mothers glory in the divine right of home making, and many ills of the day will find remedy. The divorce rate would rapidly decline. Juvenile delinquency would decrease, and public institutions for the correction of criminals would be emptied. Strength of character would be the hallmark of Christian civilisation.

Mother, you guide the destiny of your child, your country, and the world. Will you dedicate yourself anew to your high calling? The world has a good supply of women, but desperately needs more mothers.

Missionary News

Kneeling on my kitchen floor one day, I said, "Lord, I don't want to go on like this. Whatever Your will is for my life, that's what I want to do."

Within three weeks, I met a missionary from the Philippines. She said, "Ah! You're a school teacher. Maybe you'd like to teach small children in the Philippines. I'm planning to start a feeding program for young children." Something inside me knew that this was what God wanted me to do.

I went for three months. Three months became two years. I ministered to 4,5,6 year old children, teaching them basic skills, through an interpreter! Another lady would cook a meal of rice, vegetables (and sometimes chicken), along with a cup of milk, to provide some physical sustenance for these undernourished children.

In 1991 the Lord spoke to me again of the Philippines and I felt Him directing me to work with children again. I returned to the Philippines , and in June 1992 commenced the Christian pre-school. It has continued since then, teaching basic skills with a strong emphasis on the Word of God, and Christian character. Often children with little pre-school background drop out of school during or shortly after Grade 1. Many of our students, through the goodness of Australians, have had books, uniforms and school costs met for them.

Serving the Lord is certainly a great challenge and there are sometimes times of discouragement and difficulty, but I really appreciate the privilege of being able to experience God's grace in action, and His grace is certainly sufficient!

Questions God won't ask

When you go to heaven, God won't ask you:

1. How well you fed your cat, dog, or horse. But He may ask why you didn't spend more money to give the Bread of Life to lost men;

2. How many Cokes and other beverages you consumed on earth. But He may remind you that you could have used that money to provide the Living water for thirsty souls in foreign lands;

3. Whether you toured the world and "walked where Jesus walked" in Palestine. But He may ask how many footsteps you took for Jesus' sake in your own town or city;

4. How many hours of television you watched. But He may ask you why you couldn't find time for prayer;

5. How much time you spent on beautifying your yard. But He may ask you how much time you spent edifying fellow Christians;

6. How outspoken you were about politics, sports, or the weather. But He may invite you to explain why you were so hesitant to speak a word for Him;

7. How often you sang, "My Jesus I love Thee". But He may ask whether that love ever made a concrete effort to reach people;

8. How much time you spent with your newspaper or magazine. But He may ask why you couldn't find more time to study His Word;

9. How strongly you professed to believe in soul winning. But He may ask how many souls you won to Him. (Don Hillis, Sword of the Lord)

Occupy Till He Comes

(Lk. 19:13)

God is certainly moving around the world bringing His church unto that place ready to meet her Bridegroom. I look forward to that day the trumpet sounds and we are caught up together to meet the Lord in the air. We shall then truly be above the problems that will be occurring below. But before then the Lord has commanded us to occupy till He comes. And what a seed and harvest time we are in as this world continues to crumble down around us.

I have recently had the opportunity of sowing more seeds at a Gideon Testament distribution at the University. By the response of those who received a copy of God's Word, people are still searching for the truth, which this world cannot give. (Br Ken, Murray Bridge, SA)

Where the Rubber Hits the Road

Bro Harry Westcott, in his latest newsletter, says that the world is sick and tired of organisational Christianity and its big worldly programs. It needs the compassionate Christ. It is time to start "loosing the bonds of wickedness.. undoing the heavy burdens.. helping oppressed people into freedom.. breaking yokes of bondage.. sharing your bread with the hungry.. bringing the poor into your homes.. clothing the naked (Isa. 58, Mt. 25:34-40).

Ministries

Pastor Peter writes of blessings on evangelistic and charity work- helping folk in the Philippines, India, and the West Indies.

Bryan Warren plans to go out ministering with a small caravan, spreading the Word of God in small WA towns, from his Kalgoorlie base. He writes: "I believe time is short, and we must do what we can, while we can."

Shane Murphy of Romania reports blessings from a visiting youth team who ministered with singing, and Gospel drama.

Pastor Kulandaivelu of India reports that prayer and fasting is opening doors for the Gospel. Go Ye Missions is active in church planting, literature work, crusades, and also in helping the poor and aged.

Nev and Isabel Rogers are actively sharing God's Word across rugged NW Qld, and Northern Territory.

Br Gordon Johnson is ministering across New Zealand, busy with slide show outreach to schools.

Kurt Braun has a "Help Ministry" in Melbourne. It started when a 65-year old sister started to supply the needs of needy people- individuals, single mums, and families. Now 5 trailer-loads of foodstuffs are freely given out every week, plus furniture, clothing, and many other things. There are ministries to prostitutes and street kids. Kurt operates from a garage. Someone has just donated a 12-foot freezer to help with the enormous turn-over of food. People are being converted and great things are happening.

Sister Sue Henaway reports that the Lord has been blessing folk at Ayr. Lives have been touched for God's glory. Their church is preparing to send its missionary, Carmel Lammon, back to Kenya.

Life is never boring when serving the Lord- because the fulfilment is in serving Jesus (Peter, Warnbro, WA).

Evangelise!

Les circulates vast quantities of tracts in Toowoomba, Qld: I encourage and challenge every true believer, and every Christian church to be more focused on winning SOULS outside the sanctuary. We all have a commission and responsibility by our captain and commander-in-chief, Jesus Christ, to proclaim this wonderful Gospel, and to rescue the diseased, the dying, the destitute, the depraved, and the doomed.

This city of Toowoomba is on the road to Hell. This nation of Australia is on the road to Hell. And to make matters worse, the cults, spreading their false gospel, are more active than the true church of Jesus Christ. We have many means available to us- television, radio, newspaper, tracts, street teams, personal letters. It is time to stop making excuses to justify our not going. We blame the Australian culture, the apathy of the people, the time in which we live, the lack of money, the attitude "they have heard it all before", and the notion "it doesn't work anymore".

Just because the "spiritual" climate is tough and difficult doesn't mean we re-prioritise outreach and evangelism. Look at Noah in his day. Look at the Apostles Paul and Barnabas at Lystra (Acts 14:6-20). I know the heartbeat of God. And it is "SOULS! SOULS! SOULS!"

When does a Christian worker retire?

At 83 years of age, Clyde Brooker from Kansas, has been busy preaching in India, Africa, and the Philippines. Though physically failing, his spirit is vibrant and strong. What a challenge to younger preachers, content in plush, air-conditioned offices, preaching principally to the "converted" just once a week. People are dying by their thousands in India without ever having heard the Gospel once. An old man, with his wife, gives testimony to God's saving grace, with an open Bible in his hand. Maybe God would have you to start telling the old, old story... (Global Gospeller, 4/96)

Is Your Burden And Priority Lost, Hellbound Souls??

An Atheist's Challenge

If I firmly believe, as millions say they do, that the knowledge and practice of religion in this life influences destiny in another, then religion would mean everything to me. I would cast away earthly enjoyments as dross, earthly care as follies, and earthly thoughts and feelings as vanity. Religion would be my first waking thought, and my last image before sleep sank me into unconsciousness. I should labour in its cause alone. I would take thought for the morrow of Eternity alone. I would esteem one soul gained for heaven worth a life of suffering. Earthly consequences would never stay my hand, or seal my lips. Earth, its joys and its griefs, would occupy no moment of my thoughts. I would strive to look upon Eternity alone, and on the immortal souls around me, soon to be everlastingly happy or everlastingly miserable. I would go forth to the world and preach to it in season and out of season, and my text would be, "WHAT SHALL IT PROFIT A MAN IF HE GAIN THE WHOLE WORLD AND LOSE HIS OWN SOUL?" (Sent in by Les, Toowoomba, Qld; of course, as Christians, we know that "religion" cannot save us- only a personal "relationship" with our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.)

Have Your Say

WHAT'S HAPPENING AMONGST THE CHURCHES??? IS IT REVIVAL???

So many readers have written to me on current trends. I feel that they have some important things to say. Many readers have written asking me not to fear to print "doom & gloom" material. I feel that it is appropriate to sound a warning, where appropriate, though our endeavour is to emphasise the positives of Christian living.

"Fresh Fire Reports"

A lot of churches down here are into this Toronto Blessing (??). It seems to be splitting churches everywhere- people leaving the churches because of it. (Br Woodmore, SA)

The "Latter Rain" doctrine as applied to the church does not seem to have any Scriptural support. For the Jews (Remnant) yes! (Br Willis, Bexhill, NSW)

There have been many things happening which I cannot accept- the Toronto abomination. I, like many others, have left AOG Paradise because of this, and other unfortunate happenings. I have been with AOG for nearly 18 years. It is not easy to move out after so long. But I cannot endorse things un-Biblical, or, as in the case of Toronto, not of God. We are experiencing times of deception, not only in the secular world but in many churches who are departing from Scriptural truth and unless we, the people, act as the Bereans and "search the Scriptures to see if it is so", then we are in danger of being deceived and "believing a lie". (Sis Joyce, Adelaide, SA)

As a 78 y.o. pensioner I must confess to sometimes wondering just how much longer I will be around but as long as I am, I am willing to do what I can to diffuse the light of God's Truth during a darkening apostasy, in which the Lord's people of this generation are called to witness. I fear that their jesus is not that Jesus revealed in Scripture, but another- made after the rudiments of religious tradition and ecumenical co-operation. Such co-operation seeks to embrace all the religions of the world. No doubt these trends will be classed by many as doom and gloom conspiracy theory, be that as it may. They are facts, to ignore them only helps on the evil. As the old saying goes, "all that evil requires that it may prosper, is that good men do nothing". We live in unparalleled days. Even the unconverted are aware and uneasy. The lawlessness, the licentiousness, wickedness in high places as the days of Noah, the scoffers, Lot, the increasing power of the Sodomites... (Br Les, Meeniyan, Vic)

We are Pentecostals... but it is certainly true that people are being deceived with a counterfeit in the Howard-Browne/Copeland/Hagin blasphemy which is going on today. In these last days we believe that the Christian church is under an attack from the enemy, but nevertheless God has it all in hand... The church at large is being deceived by these imposters, who are only out to make empires for themselves whilst they make merchandise of the people of the Lord Jesus. The problem today in the church is that with the charismatic movement there are so many excesses, and we will have none of them. The Toronto movement has caused countless thousands of people to become confused and misled. We receive report after report of people in tears as they have left their church with nowhere to go...

We do not pray for revival, for the Word tells us that there will be no revival in the last days. In fact the opposite is said by the Lord, "And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold" (Mt. 24:12). And again in 1 T. 4:1 "..in latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils..." This is exactly what is happening today. The numbers swell in some churches, but holiness and righteousness are not taught. That is why the church is following after the Toronto thing, and the new wave to break on our shores, The Promise Keepers. This last seems so good on the outside, but we have the full papers on the "rules", and they would shock you. It is so subtle, but we know once more that the born again children will be kept safe in the hands of the Lord. The ecumenical movement is at the bottom of these movements. (Gwen Rowland, counter-cult ministry, Wheelers Hill, Vic)

Nowhere in the New Testament will you find any mention of a coming revival. All that is spoken of is apostasy from the truth and from THE Faith. Yes, there have been times of conviction amongst many and a true turning to God, but overall there is nothing spoken of in Scripture of a coming revival. All those who speak about a revival coming are the propagators of error such as Copeland, Hinn, etc. The only revival about is one in pagan teachings and practices.

The Psalmist says that we are to "Serve the LORD with FEAR and REJOICE with TREMBLING" (Ps. 2:11). There is so little of this fear and trembling amongst Christians today. (Br Moreno, Reservoir, Vic)

I appreciate what you wrote when you said readers suggested you get away from doom and gloom/conspiracy theories. However, I would ask you not to be influenced by these people too much. Our Saviour's good news is important for the hope of mankind. But as you know- we have to give it to the folks as it really is- warts and all- otherwise Fair Dinkum could end up like the churches- lots of mamby-pamby sweet sounding hum-bug. Just a thought! (Alan, Guildford, WA)

I have never considered it to be doom and gloom to blow the warning trumpet as the Lord tells us to do many times in His Word. It is a real blessing to see how the prophecies that are in the Bible are being fulfilled. Great persecution will come upon God's people. Are we ready for it? The early church was ready for it, when they were fed to the lions, flogged, imprisoned and starved. Paul, who lost all his worldly goods, was ready for it, to the point that he considered all the worldly things as rubbish, and he was looking forward to his heavenly rewards. The time is running out for all mankind to come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour. (Ron, Newcastle, NSW)

We want nothing to do with the AOG anymore. The Toronto Blessing has now been proved to be false, and the Vineyard ministry has disassociated itself from them- the Toronto Airport church. There have been a number of marriage split-ups of pastors and their wives in four denominations that we know of personally. It seems that God is cleansing His church in readiness for His return. There are still pastors flitting back and forth overseas. It is sickening to see and hear about it. (Br Bond, Morphett Vale, SA)

Fair Dinkum in the new format is very attractive. But I prefer the previous 'fire and brimstone' style... The Rodney Howard-Browne phenomenon has caused our resignation from the Noble Park Christian Church and any other AOG for that matter. We are praying that God will send us to a 'fair dinkum, dinki di' church.

Howard-Browne is an apostate, who is diluting the gospel in such a way that the House of God has been turned into a 'Groucho Marx' show. Worse still, the entire AOG hierarchy, from Phil Hills to Alun Davies have been sucked into the movement. These "men of God" do not have one iota of discernment. For us they have lost all credibility. I sincerely believe "The Toronto Blessing" should be exposed as a counterfeit. Sadly enough, elders and friends from the AOG whom I have warned have so far refused to listen to me. Of course, I hope you will take the appropriate steps in denouncing this apostasy (Br Guy, Mulgrave, Vic).

My Response

A statement is called for, on where I stand on this issue. Some accept the Toronto Blessing; one reader testifies to receiving a blessing from the experience. Nevertheless, I believe that on the whole, it is unscriptural. No doubt I'll get some "hate mail" for this stand, and lose many readers. I've already been classified as "religious" and a "Pharisee" by those who ape Howard-Browne's style.

A Pentecostal for 16 years, I have served in many roles and ministry positions. I don't speak from the perspective of one who is traditionally opposed to supposed phenomena of "the Spirit". I've attended Rodney Howard-Browne's Brisbane meetings for a week, have heard numerous of his tapes and several videos. I have read profusely on the subject. I have collected piles of material which details its dangers, and traumatic experiences suffered by those exposed to this manifestation. I've also read a comprehensive study of "Slaying in the Spirit", and other Toronto practices.

I have not referred to this manifestation till now, in the hope that the false wind of doctrine would just blow over. However, it appears to be lingering. Out of concern for my many readers, I feel the need to raise awareness of its dangers. This is not something that I wish to waste a lot of ink discussing. However, it is a topical subject, which is causing tremendous confusion and disunity. This is why I would like to examine it, as well as Biblical teachings about healing and spiritual gifts. I do want to focus on the "Fair Dinkum" Christianity, and not overly spend time talking about the "Gammen" (False) variety.

I feel to make a stand- no matter what the cost. Standing for the truth involves labelling error for what it is. Even if rat poison only contains 5% actual poison it is lethal poison, and needs to be clearly labelled. It's the same with this movement. The error in it makes the whole package dangerous.

Extracts from Moriel newsletter, written by Pentecostal minister, Jacob Prasch:

Sandy Miller of Holy Trinity Brompton and Bishop David Pytches who promote the Vineyard Laughing Revival in the UK are the same figures who promoted the Vineyard's Kansas City Phenomenon five years ago, when John Wimber, Paul Cain, and Mike Bickel gave false prophetic promises of the greatest revival in Britain's history for October 1990. In the five years since, we have had more mosques built in England than churches. In New Zealand, it is the same Ian Bilby promoting Toronto who falsely predicted an earthquake under the influence of Gerald Coates four years ago. In Australia, it is Phil Pringle, who falsely predicted on television that Jesus would return in 1988.

I bear these men no ill, but Deuteronomy 18 and Jeremiah 28 make it clear that we are to avoid those who make false prophetic predictions in the Name of the Lord. The disastrous track record of such men is undeniable. God says that to continue to follow such men is a form of rebellion sure to bring his judgment (Jer. 5:30-31).

When the real fire fell, thousands and thousands were saved. That is not the case today. On the contrary, Paul and Moses warned, when the unsaved see this kind of excess they say we are mad (1 Cor. 14:23, Ex. 32:25). This is exactly what happens when they see such chaotic meetings. As scripture warns, this kind of behaviour prevents revival, it does not bring it. It resembles more the priests of Baal ranting and raving in open lunacy, louder and louder, because they are unable to make the fire fall.

Acts 2 tells us that on the Day of Pentecost people heard the mighty deeds of God in verse 11, they did not hear slurred speech as if from intoxicated men. Peter's preaching was intelligent, coherent and convicting. It was not a human being imitating a monkey or drunken babbling. The world and the secular media are mocking this in England. It brings no conversions. It only prevents and discredits the church.

The General Secretary of the assemblies of God in the USA, George Wood, has issued a statement questioning and warning against it. David Wilkerson, the most respected Pentecostal minister in the world has denounced it as a false revival. David Pawson, the most respected charismatic Bible teacher in Britain rejects it, as does Pentecostal Pastor, Chuck Smith, leader of the largest Evangelical church in the western world.

As cult-researcher, Hank Hanegraff, says: "Tolerance when it comes to truth is a travesty." I do not claim the following condensed, compiled information as my own work. It is prayerfully issued to call the church to "sound doctrine". I do not present this material lightly.

Is This That?

Toronto and the Faith Movement Examined by the Bible.

Toronto's "New Wave" is closely linked with the Faith Movement. As a "Fair Dinkum" Christian, I want to compare Bible truth with modern emphasis and practice- some of which is dangerous.

We Need to Examine what is going on.
(1 Th. 5:21)

Is it Biblical? Involuntary, emotional frenzies. Chaos and confusion. Loss of consciousness. Obvious demonic manifestations, left unrestrained. Chanting- like the mantras of Transcendental Meditation. The Word of God laughed at. Uncontrollable hysteria. The appearance of insanity. Weird, writhing or shaking manifestations. Disruptive, unnatural laughter. Frivolity, showmanship, irreverence. Staggering about.

Unbelievers look on and say: "You are out of your mind!" (1 Cor. 14:23). Such foolish antics make true Christianity a laughing stock, make a mockery of the Gospel, and dishonour Christ.

As John Wimber says of the manifestations, which he promotes: "There is nothing in Scripture to support these kinds of phenomena." If it is not according to the Word of God, then how can it be of God?

Need to Exercise Discerning of Spirits.
We must "judge" (1 Cor. 12:10, 14:29). Not every "spiritual experience" is of God.

Need for a Biblical Foundation.
The Bible is the final authority in matters of faith and practice, not our experiences or impressions (Mt. 7:22-23, 2 T. 3:16,17). Does it line up with God's Word (Acts 17:11)? Our faith is founded on the sufficiency of Scripture (Rom. 10:2).

False Teachings. Here's a sample...

You don't have a God living in you, you are one! Every Christian is a god... You have all the capabilities of God. (Copeland)

Hinn teaches that Christians confessing that they are "a sinner saved by grace" only insult God with such "garbage".

Hinn calls Job "carnal" and "bad"- contrast this with what God calls him (Job 1:8, 2:3)!

The Pope... is very responsive to the charismatic movement and is himself a born-again evangelical. If you read any of his texts concerning salvation, you'd know he is preaching the gospel as clear as anybody is preaching it in the world today. (Wimber)

Oral Roberts claims he had a 7 hour conversation with a 900-foot Jesus who told him to build the City of Faith Medical Center. This "Jesus" made false promises in exchange for money; there would be cures for cancer and other diseases if Oral's "prayer partners" would each contribute $240. Simple, sincere people (who still believe him today) sent more than the $150 million to complete the 20-storey complex. There was no miracle, no cure for cancer or anything else "Jesus" promised. The hospital went bankrupt in spite of additional millions of dollars fiven by gullible Christians in response to further false promises. Either Oral Roberts lied, or he was lied to by a deceiving spirit.

The believer is as much an incarnation as was Jesus of Nazareth. (Hagin)

...Don't try and judge what is happening here, just drink, and leave that to the Lord...Now just close your eyes. Don't pray. (Howard-Browne)

Beware of Extra-Biblical Revelation. Extra-Biblical revelations (ie., additional to the Bible) are not valid (Deut. 4:2, Re. 22:18-19). There is no need for ongoing, prophetic revelation- the Word of God is a completed revelation (2 P. 1:19); we dare not take away from or add to any of its precepts (Pr. 30:5-6).

Beware of Confusion.
God is not the author of confusion...Let all things be done decently and in order (1 Cor. 14:33, 40).

Beware of Deception.
Take heed... many will come in My Name... and will deceive many... (Mt. 24:4-5, 2 T. 3:13).

Beware of Doctrinal Deception.
(Eph. 4:14; 1 Jn. 2:26).

Beware of Doctrinal Compromise.
In the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils... (1 T. 4:1, Jude 3). Tongues-speaking Catholics have not repented of their false religion (2 Cor. 6:14-18, Rev. 18:4). It is unscriptural to have unity with Catholics and false cults (Amos 3:3).

Beware of a Different Jesus, a Different Spirit, and a Different Gospel.
(2 Cor. 11:3-4, Gal. 3:1; cf., Gal. 1:6-8).

Beware of the Health & Wealth, Positive Confession Gospel.
(Mt. 6:19-21; Lk. 12:15, 2 Cor. 11:23-33, 1 Cor. 4:11, 1 T. 6:9, Jn. 6:27). The prosperity oriented money preachers teach "another gospel"- a faith totally contrary to the one described in Hebrews 11.

Beware of- and warn of- False Teaching, False Teachers.
(Acts 20:28-31; cf. Mt. 7:15, 24:4-5, 23-26).

Beware of "False Fire".
(Lev. 10:1-2). Is our worship according to God's Word? If not- look out!

Beware of False Prophets.
(Mt. 24:11, 24, 2 P. 2:1-3, Mt. 7:15-16, Jer. 5:30-31, 6:13, Deut. 13:1-5, 2 P. 2:1, Acts 8:20). God's prophets had to be 100% accurate at all times- or they were sentenced to death (Deut. 18:15-22, 19:22, Jer. 23:25-26). The test of a true prophet is 100% accuracy. People who boast of titles such as "prophet" or "apostle" don't meet Bible standards of these ministries.

Beware of False Visions, and New Revelations.
(Gen. 37:5-7; Mt. 1:20, 2:12; cf. Jer. 14:14, Eph. 5:17, Phil. 1:9-11, 2 Cor. 5:7). We need, as believers, to submit to God's will and Word (1 Jn. 5:14-15; Jas 4:15), instead of resorting to occultic, "New Age" visualisation methods.

Beware of Deceiving Miracle Workers.
Wonderful works are not the ultimate proof of truth (Mt. 7:21-23).

Beware of Satanic Signs and Wonders.
(2 Cor. 11:14, Gal. 1:8, 2 Th 2:9-11).

Beware of Deceiving, Demonic Miracles.
(Rev. 13:13, 16:14, 1 Jn. 4:1).

Beware of Deceiving Ministers.
(Rev. 2:2).

Beware of the Counterfeit god.
(Isa. 14:14; Ex. 7:10,11).

Beware of depending on Voices, or using Impulses for "Guidance".
(2 P. 1:18).

Beware of the Falling Away- a Sign of the Deceptive Last Days- the Decline of True Faith.
(2 Th 2:2). Lack of true Bible Faith will prevail, not revival (Lk. 18:8). In the last days perilous (demonic) times shall come (2 T. 4:1). Christians should be wary of any signs or wonders movement in these last hours. The signs and wonders movement prophesied in the Bible for the hours prior to Christ's return is one of demonic deception (Mt. 10:34, 13:3, 24:24; 2 Th. 2:7-9, 2 T. 3:13; Rev. 13:13-14).

Beware of Rock Music.
Loud, worldly-style rock music, amplified beat, and repetitive, meaningless songs create a hypnotic atmosphere. When Israel turned its back on God its music became "noise" (Ezek. 26:13, Amos 5:23).

Need for Soberness.
(Eph. 5:18, 1 P. 5:8; Titus 2:1-8, 11-14, 2 T. 1:7).

Need for Self Control.
(1 Cor. 14:32). Self-control is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, as is real "Joy"; not manufactured, insane laughter (Gal. 5:22-23).

Need to Apply your Mind.
(1 P. 1:13, 2 Cor. 10:5). We are not to make our minds empty or blank. God wants a thinking, reasoning, rational people (Isa. 1:18). The Holy Spirit accompanies an intelligent reception of the truth (Jn. 4:24). The true Gospel informs the mind, and demands a decision of the will (Jos. 24:15). The conscious, intelligent mind is involved in all worship and spiritual experience- not turned off. We are to keep our mind alert and functioning, and use it to understand God's will (Rom. 12:1-2, Eph. 4:17-24, 5:17-18, Col. 1:21-22, 3:10, 1 T. 6:3-4, 2 T. 2:15, 4:1-4, 2 P. 2:1-3).

Need to Measure "Revelation" & "Leading of the Spirit" by the Word of God.
(Isa. 8:20)

Danger of Seeking After Signs.
The Bible says that the last days of the age will be marked by a new surge of miracles (Mt. 24:24, 2 Th. 2:9-10, Mt. 16:4). Seeking of miracles is not a sign of spirituality (Mt. 12:39). "Christians need to quit seeking signs, and seek sinners" (D. Norbie).

"Slaying in the Spirit" is not Biblical.
It has absolutely no foundation in the Bible (See "Slaying in the Spirit- a Telling Wonder" by Mr N. Mikhaiel, PO Box 170, Earlwood, NSW 2206). It is only God's enemies who fall backwards (Jn 18:6; Isa. 28:13). True believers in the Bible fell forward, without trances or hysterical laughter (Gen. 17:1-3; Jos. 5:13-15; Ez. 1:28, 43:1-5, 44:4; Mt. 17:5-6; Rev. 1:17, 7:11, 11:16-17).

Loss of the Power of Speech is not of God.
(2 T. 4:2-5, Rom. 10:14).

False Fruit.
"How many have been saved in this revival?" John Arnott, pastor of Toronto: "At this stage none have come to the Lord." The "laughing revival" lacks a clear salvation message. There is no comparison with the sovereign moves of God of Wesley's era. There is no revival.

False Unity.
This "revival" promotes an unscriptural "unity based on worship", not doctrine (Acts 2:42; Gal. 1:9).

Mindless, Hysterical Laughter is not in order for God's people.
The only reference to God sending "laughter" is in His judgment on the Babylonians (Jer. 51:38-39). There are only 40 references to laughter in the Bible- just 6 times in the New Testament. 22 references speak of scornful laughter (Eg: Neh. 2:19, Ps. 59:8, Pr. 1:26). Of the 18 remaining references, seven refer to Sarah's laughter of unbelief. Bildad falsely advises Job that if he were in right standing with God he would be prosperous and full of laughter (Job 8:21). Psalm 126:2 talks of the rejoicing of God's people that the captivity of Zion was over, including singing; not a spiritually drunken state. Prov. 29:9 and Ecc. 7:6 talk of a fool's laughter. Solomon says, "laughter, it is mad" (Ecc. 2:2), that there is "a time to weep and a time to laugh" (Ecc. 3:4), and "a feast is made for laughter" (Ecc. 10:19). The three New Testament Scriptures warn against laughter (Lk. 6:21, 25, Jas 4:9). There is simply no Biblical precedent for so-called "holy laughter".

Wesley describes "a spirit of laughter" as demonic (cf. Jer. 51:37-39).

Spiritual Drunkenness is not in order for God's People.
The Bible talks of people Drunk, but not from wine (Isa. 29:9)- as a terrifying warning of God's judgment; certainly not a blessing on believers.

The Latter Rain Revival of Joel doesn't happen till just after the Tribulation, during the Millenium.
Joel 2:28-32, partially fulfilled in Acts 2:16, is to be fulfilled in the future Millenium. The age we are in now will end in departure from the faith, not Joel's revival. It cannot describe any "revival" before that time.

We need a True Spiritual Awakening.
Our world needs a genuine spiritual awakening, with a clear, challenging Gospel message, a call to holiness, repentance, and the fear of God, a deep awakening of sin, calling us back to Calvary (Acts 20:21; 2 P. 3:9), with people truly saved and discipled.

Bible Healing

The faith movement's false teachings about healing has confused many.

God does Heal!

Healing is referred to over 70 times in the New Testament, essentially as a testimony to the ministry of Christ and His apostles. Bible believers firmly and positively believe that the Lord Jesus in His sovereign and gracious power is able to heal, and does indeed heal the sick, in answer to simple, believing prayer.

God certainly is capable of healing today if He pleases. God can heal through human means of doctors and medication (Eg: Isa. 1:6, 38:21, Jer. 8:22, Jer. 30:13, Ezek. 27:17, 30:21, 34:4; Mt. 9:12), or He can heal when these means are incapable. Medicines do good (Prov. 17:22, 2 K. 20:7, Ezek. 34:4, Jer. 8:22, Lk. 10:34-37, Jas. 5:14-15). Paul's constant companion, Luke is known as "the beloved physician" (Col. 4:14).

It is proper for Christians to pray for divine assistance in times of physical illness, but it is wrong to demand that God heal in a specific case. It is wrong to assume that sickness is due to a specific sin, or is evidence of a lack of faith. Christ did not always require faith on the part of the sufferer (Mt. 9:32, Mk. 7:35, Lk. 22:51), nor did He confine His ministry to believers (Mt. 4:4, 8:16). In only one case out of every four was personal faith present.

Godly Men suffer Sickness and Disease.

God frequently allows very fine Christians to suffer ill health. Paul tells believers we await the future "redemption of our body" (Rom. 8:17-23, Rev. 21:4). Job, a great man of faith, was covered with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head (Job 2:7). The Apostle Paul had a "bodily illness" (Gal. 4:13). Elisha suffered and died a sick man ( 2 K. 13:14; cf. 2:9). Strength of character can come through human pain and suffering (Job 42:1-17, Rom. 5:3-5, Jas. 1:25, 1 P. 1:6-8).

Characteristics of Bible Healings.

There are 42 occasions of New Testament healings. Of these, 32 are by the Lord Jesus Christ, 9 through apostles, and one occasion reports the ministry of the seventy. In each and every occasion, total healing is effected, totally, and instantly.

People were healed from serious problems;
physically deformities, or crippled organs, as well as blindness.

All who came to the Lord Jesus were healed (Lk. 4:40, 9:11).
Everyone was healed of every infirmity of every kind (Mt. 4:23-24).
No one missed out. All who came to the apostles were healed (Acts 19:11-12).

Faith was not a requirement for being healed.
The Lord Jesus healed people who had faith as well as some who did not (Mt. 8:1, 14; 9:32, 12:10, Lk. 22:50-51). It was not just those who had faith. Sometimes those healed were not even present (Jn 4:46-54, Mt. 8:5-13). The Lord Jesus healed the maniac of Gadara in spite of his protests (Mk. 5:7-8). The lame beggar was looking for money rather than healing (Acts 3:1-8). There are many occasions of miraculous healing without any faith at all on the part of anyone. Fully one third of all Bible miracles recorded make no reference to faith at all on the part of the one who was to be relieved or healed. Faith teachers tell people that if they were more spiritual, if they had more faith, if they believed like they believed, they would be well. It is not scriptural to blame a lack of healing on the lack of faith of the one afflicted.

The Lord Jesus healed instantly and immediately. (Mt. 8:13-15)
No time was needed for natural healing processes. Christ's healings were successful (Mt.12:15)- even on incurable diseases (Mt. 8:3). Scriptural healing is immediate (Mk. 5:29, Mt. 8:14-15, Acts 3:7). The healings were also permanent, not temporary (Lk. 7:15). Bible healings always lasted, with NO relapses, or recurrence. Today people are told that they are healed but that the symptoms have not yet gone. This is nonsense.

God used the apostles. (Acts 3:1-16)
Peter and John did not ask the lame man for a big offering and tell him if he had the faith enough he could be healed. The miracle was not done at a Christian meeting, but in public view of the Jews as a divine confirmation of the apostolic message, before the church had the completed, written word of God.

There are limited records of Christians being healed.
Apart from the resurrection of Dorcas (Acts 9:36-42), and Paul's unusual case of blindness (Acts 9:18), we never read of a believer being miraculously healed from any disease, although we read at least 6 times of believers being ill. Timothy, Gaius, and Paul himself suffered in this way. Paul had to leave his own friend, Trophimus behind in Miletus because he was sick (2 T. 4:20).

Need of Discernment.

The devil can heal (Rev. 13:3, 4, 12-15). Bible healing always glorified God by confirming either His nature or His Word (Heb. 2:3,4). Jesus did not want His miracles publicised (see Lk. 8:56, Mt. 9:30, 12:16, Mk. 7:36, 8:26). There were no theatrics or publicity. The Lord Jesus did not want His miracles to detract from His mission- to seek and save that which was lost.

Is Healing in the Atonement?

In Matthew 8:16-17 Christ sympathetically bore, in His spirit, the infirmities and pains of those He healed during His lifetime. He entered into the sufferings and sorrows of those He healed (Mk. 5:30, Heb. 4:15, Isa. 63:9). The healing mentioned in Isa. 53:5 was fulfilled during the healing ministry of Christ, not at the cross- because of His compassion on those who came to Him, not because He died for their sicknesses. Isa. 53:4 uses the word "griefs" or "disease"; it signifies soul-sickness (Jer. 6:7, 10:19, Isa. 17:11), or soul-distress (Isa. 65:14, Ps. 32:10). It refers to iniquities, transgressions, and sins and spiritual healing (Jer. 3:22). Peter quotes Isaiah, and refers it to sin; he does not say a word about sickness (1 P. 2:24). It is the great malady of mankind- sin-sickness- our sins which are healed by His stripes. The earthly healing work of Christ was "that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins" (Mt. 9:6). All the apostles unite in declaring that Christ atoned for sins on the cross- not that He atoned for sicknesses (Rom. 3:25, 5:6-11; 2 Cor. 5:18-21; 1 P. 2:24). If healing is in the atonement, then all sickness is of the devil. It would be a sign of backsliding- but this is not true in the case of Job. History proves that even the very best saints of God die. If healing is in the atonement, why do Christians die?

Is it Always God's Will to Heal?

We know that as He wills, God heals. Not always does He choose to. It is not always God's will to heal, or to heal immediately (2 Cor. 12:7-10, 2 T. 4:20). The sincere desire of every Christian should be, "Not my will, but Thine be done". God can and does heal when it is His sovereign will to do so. The purpose of Paul's sickness was to keep him humble (2 Cor. 12:7, 10). Could God have healed Paul? Yes, certainly. God could have healed him instantaneously. Why didn't God heal Paul? It was not His will.

God's perfect will for the individual believer may be good health or it may be moderate or even extreme suffering. Witness the physical infirmities of such saints of God as Job (Job 1,2), Timothy (1 T. 5:23), and Epaphroditus, who was sick nigh unto death (Phil. 2:25-30). In none of these is the illness and suffering ascribed to sin or lack of faith.

See 1 Peter 2:21. "Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps". Phil. 3:10 refers to "the fellowship of sharing in His sufferings". Suffering is an integral part of life, and is often used by God to develop and mature us (2 Cor. 4:10; Jas. 1:2). God can have a purpose, and bring blessing, in affliction (Ps. 119:67, 75). Suffering can profit us spiritually (Heb. 12:5-7, 11). We know that it can be in the will of God that we suffer. At times it is in the perfect will of God for the believer to suffer bodily and ultimately to die (Phil. 1:20). Even Jesus Himself learned obedience through what He suffered (Heb. 5:8).

Is All Sickness of the devil?

Job's sickness and calamities were not punishments of sin, but rather tests of fidelity for God. Job testifies of his love for God, his confidence in Him, and his faithful reliance on Him (Job 13:15), and God spoke in favour of His servant Job, and in reproof of those who wrongly represented that his sickness and calamities were punishments for sin. It is common in the faith-healing movement to ascribe all sickness to sin or satan.

Blessings from Sickness.

We believe that God answers prayer for the sick. This is why we pray and ask God to heal the sick (Jas. 5:14). Sickness does not, however, brand one as unfaithful or disobedient. Adversities, disappointments, troubles, disadvantages, and hardships, can really be great blessings in disguise. Sometimes God teaches us through our suffering. We are exhorted to "glory in tribulations", and the Apostle Paul praises "the God of all comfort, Who comforteth us in all our tribulations.." (2 Cor. 1:3,4).

Paul discusses the bondage of the body to the principle of decay in 2 Cor. 4:7-5:9. Our outward man, our body, is continually wasting away, whilst our inward man, our spirit, is constantly being refreshed and renewed. Paul clearly says that he had a bodily illness (Gal. 4:13-14). Paul, the model Christian, gloried in his infirmities (2 Cor. 11:30, 12:9-10- it means sickness or disease, as used in Mt. 8:17). If sickness is contrary to the will of God, then Paul gloried in being out of the will of God, and it was the grace of God which taught him how to do it. We have faith in God, no matter what He may choose to do, or allow to happen. Job said, "Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him" (Job 13:15). God permitted satan to afflict Job with disease, not because of his sin, but because of his integrity! (Job 1:6-21; 2:1-10). Job learned to know God better than ever before as a result of his sickness.

Confessing Healing when you are Sick?

Many charismatics teach others to "Start seeing yourself healed". This "Healing by imagination" is occultic and New Age. Did the Lord Jesus, or the disciples say, "First of all imagine that you are healed", or "see yourself in your imagination as being healed"? No- those who came to the Lord threw themselves upon His grace and mercy and He healed them instantly. They were not told to "Just believe (pretend?) something has happened." This sounds like "lying signs and wonders" (2 Th. 2:8-11).

Recognise Divine Sovereignty.

God exercises His sovereignty in healing His creatures. There were cases which God did not choose to heal (Phil. 2:25-30, 1 T. 5:23 <infirmities/sicknesses>, 2 T. 4:20). Believers do not have the right to perfect health. God refused to heal Paul (2 Cor. 12:7-10). Did Paul have a lack of faith? Of course not! When God doesn't heal, accept it as His will (2 Cor. 12:8). God may allow infirmities to remain with us that we might trust His grace and strength. Paul was a man rich in faith, yet his life was riddled with sufferings of every kind (2 Cor. 11:23-30). We need to encourage each other in the faith, realising that we must enter the kingdom of God through much tribulation (Acts 14:22).

Benny Hinn says, "Never, ever, ever go to the Lord and say, 'If it be Thy will...' Don't allow such faith destroying words to be spoken from your mouth.." In contrast, the Lord Jesus taught us to pray, "Thy will be done" (Mt. 6:10). Many other Scriptures talk about submission to God's will (Mt. 26:39, Jas. 4:15, Rom. 1:10, 15:32). God is in control.

God has healed many in the past, and still can heal people. The full and free salvation which we receive when we believe the gospel does not include a promise of freedom from sickness, disease, depression, and poverty. True, we can draw on God's grace when we are in these conditions, and will always find it more than enough for us. But we still live in a groaning creation which suffers from the effects of sin. One day He will transform our lowly bodies and make them like His own glorious body (Phil. 3:20-21). Then we will cease to be part of this "groaning creation" (Rom. 8:18-23). Then death will be swallowed up in victory (1 Cor. 15:51-54). Therefore do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day (2 Cor. 4:16).

Spiritual Gifts

Ignorance.
(1 Cor. 12:1). Believers must not be ignorant on the subject of spiritual manifestations. Much of what is claimed today to be "the gifts of the Spirit" are not.

The Signs of an Apostle.

Mark 16 details the signs that were to follow and authenticate the ministry of the eleven. Their healing ministry had 100% recovery all the time. Certain "Signs" particularly belonged to the Apostles (2 Cor. 12:12)- not every believer (Acts 5:12-16, 19:11, 2:43, Rom. 15:19). God endorsed and authenticated the apostolic gospel message initially with "signs and wonders" (Heb. 2:3,4). Mighty signs attested to their unique authority and unique place in God's program (Mt. 19:28, Rev. 21:4). If the signs of an apostle were around today then there would be men of equal authority to Peter and Paul. It is obvious that there are no true "apostles" alive today.

Foundational Gifts for the Infant Church.

Apostles and prophets are the foundation gifts of the church (Eph. 2:20). They laid the foundations of the church. That which is perfect is come (the Scriptures) and therefore that which is in part is done away (1 Cor. 13:8-10). They belonged to the "infant" days of the church- the childhood days of Christianity (1 Cor. 13:11).

Extra-Biblical revelation: False Prophecies.

(Ez. 13:3, Jer. 23:25-26; 1 K. 13:18). The prophets in the early church were men and women who spoke God's message by inspiration. The New Testament had not yet been written, and the gift of prophecy was needed. We no longer need this gift today, because the Bible gives us the mind of God (2 P. 1:19, 2 T. 3:16).

Getting it into Perspective.

Tongues were not a common occurrence; they are rare and unusual even in apostolic times (only 3 incidents), and are mentioned in only 3 NT books. The last historical mention of tongues is in 1 Corinthians, written in 59 AD. It is a witness to the unbelieving Jews of Corinth (Cf. Acts 18). Early church writers never mention tongues.

Tongues are for a "Sign".

Five of the gifts of 1 Corinthians 12 are not named in any other epistle (gifts of faith, healings, tongues, interpretation of tongues). They are "Sign Gifts" (1 Cor. 14:22), as a sign to Israel, especially of God's displeasure and hastening wrath. They have largely fulfilled their purpose according to 1 Cor. 13:8-11.

Most prophets delivered God's truth in the Hebrew language. Suddenly- at Pentecost- the truth of God was spoken in Gentile languages. This was a sign of condemnation; of impending doom, the destruction of 70 A.D. Israel would not repent, but would display hardness of heart. "For all that will they not hear Me, saith the Lord." (Isa. 28:11, 12)

Tongues are not the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

"All" do not speak with tongues (1 Cor. 12:30), but "all" have been baptised with the Holy Spirit. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a once only event at salvation (1 Cor. 12:13, 2 P. 1:3, Col. 2:10). It is a completed act that incorporates a believer into the Body of Christ. All believers have the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:9, 1 Cor. 6:19-20), but few believers spoke in tongues. The Scriptures do not state that speaking in tongues is the evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Paul teaches that tongues are not for everyone (1 Cor. 12:10-12; 28-30; 14:23).

Paul said that the gift of tongues "will cease". (1 Cor. 13:8)

We now have that which is "Perfect"- or complete- the full Word of God. There is no Scriptural record of signs and wonders, such as healings, but rather a revelation of the lack of them (Phil. 2:27, 1 T. 5:23, 2 T. 4:20) after Acts 28:28 when Israel as a nation was cast off and set aside.

Corinthian confusion.

The Corinthian church was a scene of disorder, disunity and excesses. Paul gives specific instructions to correct the inappropriate practice of tongues at the Church of Corinth. It was not spiritual, but carnal- full of false doctrine and wrong behaviour. 1 Corinthians is a corrective letter, rebuking 13 errors, such as tongues, not recommending tongues.

Biblical Practice.

If we should exercise speaking in tongues today, why don't we follow "the commandments of the Lord" (1 Cor. 14:37) concerning its use? Paul downgraded the importance of tongues 2000 to 1 (1 Cor. 14:19). Note Paul's regulations:

Known, real languages (glossa) (1 Cor. 14:7-11, 19-22)
Given as a sign to unbelieving Israel
(Acts 2:4, 5; cf., 1 Cor. 1:22, Mt. 12:39, Jn. 6:30, 4:48, Isa. 28:11);
thus only to be used when unbelieving Jews are present (1 Cor. 14:21-23).

Not for all. (1 Co. 12:11; cf. 12:4-11, 28-31).

Not to be exercised simultaneously. (1 Cor. 14:27).
It was to be limited to three messages per meeting- to be done in turn, not simultaneously. No more than one person should speak in tongues at a time, not more than three should speak in any service (1 Co. 14:27-28).

Must be interpreted. (1 Cor. 14:13)
There should be no speaking in tongues without an interpreter (1 Co. 14:27-28). A lack of interpretation is misleading and uncertain (Vs. 7,8), useless (Vs. 9), barbarous (Vs.11), childish (Vs. 19,20), and a mad thing to do (Vs. 23).

If all in the assembly speak one language, there is no need for tongues. It is out of order (v. 9, 13,28).

Tongues is not a prayer language. Prayer and praise must be "with the understanding also" (1 Cor. 14:15-17). "Praying in the Spirit" is not in a language that you do not understand. We are to pray intelligent prayer, not continual repetition of non-words.

It is my endeavour to preach "Christ and Him crucified", and to put away childish things. I urge readers of this article to join me in declaring that "Jesus Christ is the Lord", and to win the lost of our nation at any cost. Let's declare the saving power of His name across our towns and cities, and make disciples for His glory.
